Product Description
The quarter-ounce Silver Britannia packs the full Britannia design into a smaller, lower-cost coin. It's a handy way to buy silver in small amounts, or to build up a collection over time.
The 2027 coin is part of The Royal Mint's 30th anniversary celebrations for the Silver Britannia, first issued in 1997. On the reverse you'll see:
- Philip Nathan's Britannia with her shield, olive branch and trident
- a '30' privy mark set into the waves
- a background texture that includes the number 30
The coin also carries four security features: a latent image, surface animation, micro-text and tincture lines. King Charles III's portrait by Martin Jennings appears on the obverse with the 50p face value.
Single coins are posted in a protective flip, and orders of 19 coins come in an original tube from The Royal Mint.
Smaller silver coins give you more flexibility, as you can sell a few at a time rather than parting with a whole ounce.

Investing Information
This coin is subject to VAT at the standard rate. In the UK, new silver bullion isn't VAT exempt, so VAT is built into the price.
For UK residents, it's free from Capital Gains Tax. The 2027 1/4oz Silver Britannia is UK legal tender, and UK legal tender coins are exempt from CGT.
Britannias are among the most familiar silver coins in the UK. That makes them easy for dealers to identify and buy back, and Gold Traders buys them in branch or by post.
We're happy to explain how tax works on bullion, but we can't give you individual financial advice. Please do your own research, and get professional guidance if needed, before investing.

Denomination Information
The Silver Britannia arrived in 1997, ten years after its gold partner. While the 1oz coin is the best known, The Royal Mint has also made smaller fractional silver coins for buyers who want more flexibility.
The quarter ounce shares the same heritage as the rest of the range. Britannia first appeared on Roman coins and has featured on British coins since 1672.
The silver standard has risen over time, from 958 fine Britannia silver in the early years to 999 fine silver from 2013. Security features were added in 2021, and King Charles III's portrait has appeared on new coins since 2023.
Today, the 1/4oz coin is a popular choice for gifts and for buyers who like to add to their silver holding in smaller steps.
