The Gold Britannia first appeared in October 1987. For 2027, The Royal Mint is celebrating its 40th birthday with a one-year-only update to this much-loved bullion coin.
Each coin holds one troy ounce of 24 carat, 999.9 fine gold. On the reverse is Philip Nathan's classic Britannia, the same design used on the very first coin in 1987. She holds a shield for protection, an olive branch for peace and a trident for her link with the sea.
What makes the 2027 coin different:
- '40' wave privy mark: a small mark set into the waves that celebrates 40 years of the Gold Britannia.
- Anniversary background: the textured background shows the number 40.
- Four security features: a latent image that switches between a trident and a padlock, waves that seem to move as you tilt the coin, micro-text reading DECUS ET TUTAMEN, and tincture lines on the Union flag.
The obverse shows the official coinage portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, along with the £100 face value.
Single coins are sent in a protective flip. Orders of 10 come in an original tube from The Royal Mint, and orders of 100 come in a sealed monster box.

You can also choose Click & Collect at checkout and save on postage. We'll hold your order at our Royal Wootton Bassett branch and email you when it's ready. Please bring official photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence.
We accept UK debit cards and bank transfers, but not credit cards. For larger orders, we may contact you to arrange payment by bank transfer before dispatch. We only supply customers in the UK.
Investing Information
The 2027 1oz Gold Britannia is free from VAT. Investment gold that meets HMRC's rules, including gold Britannias, is VAT exempt in the UK.
It's also free from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. Britannias are UK legal tender, and UK legal tender coins are exempt from CGT. That can make them especially appealing if you're building a larger holding over time.

The Royal Mint launched the Gold Britannia in October 1987. It gave investors a British gold bullion coin to sit alongside other famous one-ounce coins from around the world.
Britannia herself is far older than the coin. She first appeared on Roman coins, then returned to British coinage in 1672 under King Charles II. Philip Nathan's standing Britannia, created for the 1987 coin, is still used on today's bullion coins.
The coin has changed over the years. Until 2012 it was made in 22 carat gold. Since 2013 it has been struck in 24 carat, 999.9 fine gold. In 2021, The Royal Mint added four security features to help protect buyers from fakes.
Today, the 1oz Gold Britannia is a popular choice with UK investors, and a familiar coin to bullion dealers around the world.
