Product Description
The half-ounce Gold Britannia sits neatly between the full ounce and the smaller fractional coins. It gives you a meaningful amount of gold at a lower cost per coin than the 1oz.
For 2027, The Royal Mint has marked the 40th anniversary of the Gold Britannia, which was first issued in 1987. This coin carries the same anniversary details as the larger 1oz coin:
- A '40' wave privy mark, set into the sea behind Britannia.
- A textured background that features the number 40.
- Philip Nathan's 1987 design, showing Britannia with her shield, olive branch and trident.
Like every Britannia bullion coin struck from 2021 onwards, it includes four security features: a trident-to-padlock latent image, moving wave animation, DECUS ET TUTAMEN micro-text and tincture lines on the Union flag. The obverse carries Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III and the £50 face value.
Each coin is supplied in its own protective flip. If you'd like a larger quantity, please contact us to check how they'll be packed.

Investing Information
You won't pay VAT on the 2027 1/2oz Gold Britannia. Gold coins that meet HMRC's investment gold rules are exempt from VAT, and the Britannia qualifies.
Because it's UK legal tender, any gain you make when you sell is also free from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. This tax position is one reason UK coins are popular with people saving in gold over the long term.
The half-ounce Britannia is widely known across the UK bullion trade, so finding a buyer is usually simple. When you're ready to sell, we buy gold Britannias in person and by post.
Please note that we can explain the facts about tax, but we can't give personal financial advice. Do your own research and seek professional guidance before making any investment.

Denomination Information
The half-ounce Gold Britannia has been part of the range since the series began in 1987. From the start, The Royal Mint offered the coin in fractions as well as the full ounce, so buyers could choose a size that suited their budget.
Each size shares the same design. Philip Nathan's Britannia stands proudly on every coin, linking the smaller pieces to the flagship 1oz.
The half ounce has followed the same upgrades as the rest of the series. It moved from 22 carat to 24 carat gold in 2013, gained four security features in 2021 and switched to King Charles III's portrait from 2023.
Today it's a practical middle ground for investors, offering more gold than the quarter or tenth ounce coins without the larger outlay of a full ounce.
