Product Description
The quarter-ounce Gold Britannia is a smaller, more affordable way to own 24 carat bullion gold. It has the same purity and design as the full ounce coin, just in a more compact size.
The year 2027 marks 40 years since the first Gold Britannia. To celebrate, The Royal Mint has added two anniversary touches to this year's gold coins:
- a small '40' privy mark worked into the waves
- a background texture that includes the number 40
The reverse shows Philip Nathan's Britannia, first used in 1987. She carries a trident, a shield bearing the Union flag and an olive branch. The coin also includes four anti-counterfeit features: a latent image, surface animation, micro-text and tincture lines.
On the obverse is King Charles III's official coinage portrait by Martin Jennings, with the £25 face value.
We send single coins in a protective flip. For larger orders, coins may be supplied in original tubes from The Royal Mint. Please contact us if you'd like to check before ordering.
A quarter ounce is a popular size for regular, smaller purchases, and for gifts that hold real value.

Investing Information
This coin is VAT exempt. In the UK, gold coins that qualify as investment gold, like the Britannia, are not charged VAT.
The 2027 1/4oz Gold Britannia is also exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. It's legal tender in the UK, and gains on UK legal tender coins are not taxed under CGT.
Gold Britannias are a familiar sight to bullion buyers, both in the UK and abroad. That recognition helps when it's time to sell, and Gold Traders will buy your Britannias back, in branch or by post.
Our team can share facts about how tax works for bullion, but we can't advise on your personal circumstances. We'd recommend doing your own research and taking professional advice before you invest.

Denomination Information
The quarter-ounce Gold Britannia was one of the original sizes when The Royal Mint introduced the Britannia in 1987. Offering fractions made the coin easier to buy for people who didn't want to commit to a full ounce.
The design has always tied the sizes together. Britannia, who first appeared on Roman coins and returned to British coins in 1672, is shown standing with her shield and trident on every coin in the range.
Over time, the quarter ounce has kept pace with the full ounce. It switched to 24 carat gold in 2013, gained modern security features in 2021 and now carries the portrait of King Charles III.
Today, the 1/4oz Britannia is valued by investors who like to buy little and often, and by people who want a smaller gold coin that's easy to recognise and resell.

It's part of the 40th anniversary range. The 2027 gold coins carry a '40' wave privy mark and a background texture showing the number 40, and they'll only be made this year.
A quarter ounce costs less per coin, so it's easier to buy gold in smaller amounts. It's the same 999.9 fine gold and design as the 1oz coin, just smaller.
