What does the exempt CGT status mean?
Why buy CGT-exempt products?
A 1/10 ounce coin contains one tenth of a troy ounce of precious metal. That's about 3.11g of fine gold or silver, in a coin a little smaller than a 5p piece.
Tenth-ounce coins are among the smallest bullion coins you can buy. They're a simple, low-cost way to own real gold or silver, and they make popular gifts.
The Royal Mint makes the Britannia bullion coin in a tenth-ounce size in both gold and silver.
Both show Philip Nathan's Britannia, just like the larger coins. For 2027, the gold coin carries a '40' privy mark and the silver coin a '30' privy mark, celebrating 40 years of the Gold Britannia and 30 years of the Silver Britannia.
Small coins cost less each, so you can buy a little at a time. They also give you flexibility later, because you can sell a few coins without parting with a whole ounce.
The trade-off is the cost per gram. Minting, packing and handling cost almost as much for a small coin as a large one, so the premium over the metal price is usually higher on a tenth-ounce coin than on a 1oz coin.
Gold coins that qualify as investment gold, such as Gold Britannias, are free from VAT in the UK. New silver coins are charged VAT at the standard rate.
Britannias are UK legal tender, so any gain when you sell them is free from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. Tenth-ounce coins from other countries don't share this exemption.
We buy tenth-ounce coins in person at our Royal Wootton Bassett and Bodmin branches, and by post. See what we pay for a 1/10oz Gold Britannia, or browse our full Britannia range.
