What is Gothic horror?
Gothic horror is a style of story built on fear, mystery and dark settings. Think crumbling castles, wild storms, candlelit rooms and creatures that shouldn't exist.
These stories first became popular in Britain in the late 1700s. Two of the most famous, Dracula and Frankenstein, are still being read, filmed and retold more than a century later.
Count Dracula (2025)
Bram Stoker's Dracula was first published in 1897. Its villain, Count Dracula, is the best-known vampire in fiction, and he's inspired countless books, films and stage shows.
The coin was designed by American artist Joel Iskowitz. It shows Dracula wrapped in his cape, with bats overhead and an eerie castle framed by a full moon behind him.
Count Dracula was the first coin in the series, and it set the pattern for the releases that followed.
Frankenstein's Monster (2026)
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was first published in 1818. It helped shape both Gothic horror and modern science fiction, and its monster is one of the most recognisable characters ever written.
Designer William Webb captures the story's dark mood, with dramatic lightning, visible stitching and the equipment used to bring the creature to life.
Here's one for your next quiz night. In the book, Frankenstein is the scientist, Victor Frankenstein, and the creature he builds never gets a name. That's why the words on the coin read Frankenstein's Monster.

Each coin carries two security features to help protect against fakes. Tiny microdots are hidden in the reverse ('tails') design, and the obverse has guilloche engraving.
Guilloche is a fine pattern of engraved lines. It shows up as you tilt the coin in the light, and it makes the coin much harder to copy.
