Frankenstein's monster has been brought back to life, and this time he's made of solid gold. The 2026 Frankenstein 1oz Gold Bullion Coin is The Royal Mint's second Gothic Horror release, following the Count Dracula coin in 2025.
In the summer of 1816, Lord Byron challenged his guests at a villa near Lake Geneva to write a ghost story. An 18-year-old Mary Shelley took up the challenge, and her idea grew into a novel.
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus was first published in 1818. It tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who builds a living creature and then abandons it. More than 200 years later, the tale is still being retold in books, films and on stage.
The monster fills the design, with visible stitching on his skin and dramatic lightning crackling from the apparatus that brought him to life.
The words FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER run around the top of the coin. The weight and purity (1OZ 999.9 FINE GOLD) sit on the right, with the 2026 date below.
The other side shows Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III. The inscription reads CHARLES III D G REX F D 100 POUNDS. The Latin letters are short for 'by the grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith'.
Like every coin in the series, this one has two features that make it much harder to fake:
The Royal Mint has set a maximum mintage of 5,000 coins. That's the most it may ever issue. The silver version, by comparison, is limited to 50,000.
Single coins are sent in a protective flip. If you order 10, they arrive together in an original tube from The Royal Mint.
With a full troy ounce of fine gold and a design rooted in one of the world's best-known stories, this coin suits buyers who want their gold to have a little character.

The 2026 Frankenstein 1oz Gold Bullion Coin is free from VAT. It meets the UK's rules for investment gold, so no VAT is added to the price.
It's also exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. The coin is UK legal tender with a £100 face value, and gains on UK legal tender coins aren't subject to CGT. That can make a real difference if you're building a larger holding over time.
The Royal Mint's 1oz gold coins are recognised by bullion dealers across the UK and beyond, which makes them simple to sell when the time comes. Gold Traders buys gold coins too, at our branches or by post.
We're happy to explain how the tax rules work, but we can't give personal financial advice. Please do your own research, and speak to a qualified adviser before you make an investment decision.
The £100 face value is the one The Royal Mint gives to its 1oz gold bullion coins, including the Gold Britannia. The coin isn't meant to be spent. Its value comes from its gold content and the live gold price, while its legal tender status brings tax benefits for UK investors.
This coin was authorised by a Royal Proclamation made at Buckingham Palace on 3 June 2026. The Proclamation sets out the coin's standard weight of 31.21 grams, its 32.69mm diameter and a gold fineness of at least 999.9 parts per thousand.
The Gothic Horror series began in 2025 with Count Dracula, designed by American artist Joel Iskowitz. Frankenstein's monster followed in 2026 with the same specification: one ounce of fine gold, microdots on the reverse and guilloche engraving on the obverse.
Themed bullion coins like this one from The Royal Mint are priced on their gold content plus a premium. That gives buyers the security of a recognised gold coin, with a design that's a little more unusual than most.
