A legend on British coins
St George first appeared on English coins in 1526, on a gold coin called the George noble. It showed the saint battling a dragon.
In 1817, Benedetto Pistrucci created his famous St George and the dragon design for the modern Sovereign. It's still one of the best-known designs in British coinage.
The Royal Mint launched its St George and the Dragon bullion series in 2024. Each release offers a fresh interpretation of the legend.
The designs
The 2024 coin features a contemporary depiction by Jody Clark, with St George on horseback driving his lance into the dragon.
The 2025 coin brings back a design by George Kruger Gray, created for George V's Silver Jubilee in 1935. It had never appeared on a coin until this release.
The 2026 coin features a new design by Sandra Deiana, marking 500 years since St George first appeared on English coins. It includes an inscription taken from the George noble, plus micro-text for added security.
Every coin carries the official coinage portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings.

Bullion coins only
The Royal Mint has also used St George and the dragon on collector coins, such as proof coins in its Great Engravers collection. Those coins aren't part of this bullion series, and our listings here are for the bullion coins only.
St George and the Dragon coins and tax
All St George and the Dragon bullion coins are UK legal tender. That means any gain you make when you sell them is free from Capital Gains Tax (CGT) for UK residents.
The gold coins are 999.9 fine, so they count as investment gold and are VAT-free. Silver isn't VAT-free in the UK. New silver coins carry VAT at the standard rate, while pre-owned silver coins are sold under the VAT margin scheme, so VAT is only charged on the dealer's margin.
If you're not sure how tax applies to you, it's worth speaking to a tax adviser.
