Valiant Silver Coins

Silver Valiant Coins

St George and the dragon in 999.9 fine silver from The Royal Mint

Valiant coins are silver bullion coins from The Royal Mint. They show St George, England's patron saint, slaying the dragon. The series ran from 2018 to 2021, in 1oz and 10oz sizes.

Every Valiant coin is struck in 999.9 fine silver (99.99% pure), and they're UK legal tender. That makes them free from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents.

You'll find our full range of Valiant coins below.

What is the Valiant coin?

The Royal Mint launched the Valiant bullion coin in 2018. It was made with overseas investors in mind, especially in the USA.

The name reflects the bravery of St George. Each coin shows him on horseback at the moment he defeats the dragon, a story of honour, courage and victory.

The St George and the dragon design

The design is by the artist Etienne Millner. It's a modern take on the St George legend, and the action fills almost the whole coin.

Behind St George is a guilloche pattern. That's a fine pattern of repeating engraved lines, a bit like the ones you see on banknotes.

Parts of the design are incuse, which means they're cut into the coin rather than raised up from it. The Royal Mint says the Valiant was its first bullion coin with an incuse design. Frosting picks out parts of the picture, so they stand out from the background.

The other side shows Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Every Valiant coin carries this portrait, as the series ended in 2021, before the change to King Charles III.

Valiant coin sizes and years

Size Years made Pure silver Diameter Face value
10oz Silver Valiant 2018 to 2021 10 troy oz (311g) 89mm £10
1oz Silver Valiant 2019 to 2021 1 troy oz (31.1g) 38.61mm £2

10oz Silver Valiant

The 10oz coin came first, in 2018. That's unusual, as most bullion series start with a 1oz coin. At 89mm across, it's a big, impressive coin that shows off the design in plenty of detail.

1oz Silver Valiant

The 1oz coin followed in 2019. The Royal Mint sold it on its own in a coin capsule, or in tubes of 25 coins.

The design stayed the same each year. For 2021, The Royal Mint added a micro-dot texture to the flat background of the 1oz coin.

Valiant coins and tax

Valiant coins are UK legal tender. That means any gain you make when you sell them is free from Capital Gains Tax (CGT) for UK residents.

Silver doesn't count as investment gold, so VAT can apply when you buy silver coins. If you're not sure how tax applies to you, it's worth speaking to a tax adviser.

Yes. We buy Valiant coins of every year, in both the 1oz and 10oz sizes. You can sell them at our Royal Wootton Bassett or Bodmin branches, or send them to us by post.

No. The newest Valiant coins on The Royal Mint's records are dated 2021. That means every Valiant coin you can buy today is from the 2018 to 2021 run, and all of them carry the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Yes. Valiant coins are UK legal tender, with a face value of £2 for the 1oz coin and £10 for the 10oz coin. That means UK residents don't pay Capital Gains Tax on any profit when they sell them.

Silver isn't VAT-free in the UK, but the Valiant coins we sell are pre-owned. They're sold under the VAT margin scheme, so VAT is only worked out on our margin, not the full price. This usually makes them cheaper than buying new silver coins.

The Royal Mint made the 10oz Silver Valiant from 2018 to 2021, and the 1oz Silver Valiant from 2019 to 2021. So there are four 10oz dates and three 1oz dates in total. Every coin is struck in 999.9 fine silver and shows Queen Elizabeth II.
