Coins featuring His Majesty King Charles III mark a new chapter in British numismatic history. From 2022 onwards, The Royal Mint began issuing gold and silver coins bearing the official portrait of King Charles III, making these pieces highly collectable and historically significant.

Coins Bearing the Portrait of King Charles III

\r\n

The accession of King Charles III in September 2022 ushered in a new era for the British monarchy and UK coinage. In keeping with long-standing Royal Mint tradition, the monarch's effigy is updated on all newly issued legal tender coins. Coins bearing the image of His Majesty King Charles III are therefore of great historical and cultural importance, representing the first design change to the obverse of British coinage in 70 years.

\r\n

The first coins to feature King Charles III entered circulation and bullion markets in late 2022. The official effigy, designed by acclaimed British sculptor Martin Jennings, depicts the King facing left - in keeping with numismatic tradition, which alternates the direction of each new monarch's portrait.

\r\n

Coins minted with the portrait of King Charles III span both commemorative and bullion ranges. This includes popular investment coins such as the Gold Sovereign, Gold Britannia, and Silver Britannia, as well as limited-edition releases to mark significant national occasions, such as the Coronation Sovereign issued in 2023.

\r\n

These coins are not only legal tender but also form an essential part of British numismatic history. They appeal to both collectors and investors due to their historical importance, high precious metal content, and, in many cases, tax advantages - such as Capital Gains Tax (CGT) exemption for UK-issued gold legal tender coins.

\r\n

At Gold Traders, we offer a wide selection of King Charles III coins sourced directly from The Royal Mint. Whether you're interested in bullion-grade Sovereigns, investment-grade Britannias, or historic commemoratives, each coin is authenticated, securely packaged, and available for fully insured UK delivery or collection from our premises.

Yes. Gold Traders buys gold and silver bullion coins, including Gothic Horror coins from The Royal Mint. You can sell in person at our branches in Royal Wootton Bassett and Bodmin, or send your coins to us by post.

In Mary Shelley's 1818 novel, Frankenstein is the scientist, Victor Frankenstein, who builds the creature. The creature never gets a name of his own, so The Royal Mint's 2026 Gothic Horror coin calls him Frankenstein's Monster.

Gothic Horror coins have tiny microdots in the reverse design and guilloche engraving on the obverse. Guilloche is a fine pattern of engraved lines that shows up as you tilt the coin in the light. Both features make the coins much harder to copy.

Not on the gold coins. Gothic Horror gold coins count as investment gold, which is exempt from VAT in the UK. New Gothic Horror silver coins are subject to VAT at the standard UK rate, which is applied automatically at checkout.

Yes, if you live in the UK. Gothic Horror coins are UK legal tender, so any gain when you sell them is exempt from Capital Gains Tax. Please check with an adviser about your own situation.

Gothic Horror gold coins contain 1oz of 999.9 fine gold, which is 99.99% pure, and have a £100 face value. Gothic Horror silver coins contain 1oz of 999 fine silver, which is 99.9% pure, and have a £2 face value.

Each Gothic Horror coin has its own designer. American artist Joel Iskowitz designed the 2025 Count Dracula coin, and William Webb designed the 2026 Frankenstein's Monster coin. The portrait of King Charles III on the other side is by Martin Jennings.

So far, The Royal Mint has limited each Gothic Horror design to 5,000 gold coins and 50,000 silver coins worldwide. That covers both Count Dracula (2025) and Frankenstein's Monster (2026). Check the product page for the limit on any newer release.

Yes, the Gothic Horror series is ongoing. The Royal Mint called Frankenstein's Monster (2026) its second Gothic horror release, following Count Dracula in 2025. Gold Traders adds each new Gothic Horror coin to the series as it's released.

The Gothic Horror coins are 1oz gold and silver bullion coins from The Royal Mint that celebrate classic Gothic novels. The series began in 2025 with Count Dracula, from Bram Stoker's Dracula. Frankenstein's Monster, from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, followed in 2026.
