2027 1/2oz Gold Britannia Bullion Coin
Out of Stock
A 1/2 ounce coin contains half a troy ounce of precious metal. That's about 15.55g of fine gold, in a coin a little smaller than a £2 piece.
Half-ounce coins sit between the full ounce and the smaller fractional sizes. They give you a good amount of gold in one coin, without the larger outlay of a 1oz coin.
The Royal Mint has made a half-ounce Gold Britannia since the series began in 1987. Today's coins are struck in 999.9 fine gold (24 carat) and measure 27.00mm across.
Older half ounces made between 1987 and 2012 are 22 carat. They hold the same amount of pure gold but weigh a little more. For 2027, the coin carries a '40' privy mark celebrating 40 years of the Gold Britannia.
A half ounce is a practical middle ground. It costs less than a full ounce, but the premium over the gold price is usually lower than on quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce coins.
It's also flexible. If you hold several half ounces, you can sell part of your gold without parting with a whole ounce at once.
Gold coins that qualify as investment gold, such as Gold Britannias, are free from VAT in the UK.
Because Britannias are UK legal tender, any gain when you sell them is also free from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. Half-ounce coins from other countries don't share this exemption.
We buy half-ounce coins in person at our Royal Wootton Bassett and Bodmin branches, and by post. See what we pay for a 1/2oz Gold Britannia, or browse our full Britannia range.
Coins featuring His Majesty King Charles III mark a new chapter in British numismatic history. From 2022 onwards, The Royal Mint began issuing gold and silver coins bearing the official portrait of King Charles III, making these pieces highly collectable and historically significant.
\r\n
The accession of King Charles III in September 2022 ushered in a new era for the British monarchy and UK coinage. In keeping with long-standing Royal Mint tradition, the monarch's effigy is updated on all newly issued legal tender coins. Coins bearing the image of His Majesty King Charles III are therefore of great historical and cultural importance, representing the first design change to the obverse of British coinage in 70 years.
\r\n
The first coins to feature King Charles III entered circulation and bullion markets in late 2022. The official effigy, designed by acclaimed British sculptor Martin Jennings, depicts the King facing left - in keeping with numismatic tradition, which alternates the direction of each new monarch's portrait.
\r\n
Coins minted with the portrait of King Charles III span both commemorative and bullion ranges. This includes popular investment coins such as the Gold Sovereign, Gold Britannia, and Silver Britannia, as well as limited-edition releases to mark significant national occasions, such as the Coronation Sovereign issued in 2023.
\r\n
These coins are not only legal tender but also form an essential part of British numismatic history. They appeal to both collectors and investors due to their historical importance, high precious metal content, and, in many cases, tax advantages - such as Capital Gains Tax (CGT) exemption for UK-issued gold legal tender coins.

Whether you're interested in bullion-grade Sovereigns, investment-grade Britannias, or historic commemoratives, each coin is authenticated, securely packaged, and available for fully insured UK delivery or collection from our premises.
