Marlborough and coins: a long history
Few Wiltshire towns are as tied to coins as Marlborough. After the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror set up a royal mint here, striking silver pennies stamped with the town's own name. Centuries earlier, the Romans left their mark too. One of Britain's largest hoards of Roman coins, tens of thousands of them, was unearthed just east of the town at Mildenhall.
So it feels fitting that we still buy coins from Marlborough today, from a single gold sovereign to a whole inherited collection. Whether your coins are gold or silver, modern or old, you can bring them in or send a photo, and we'll tell you exactly what they're worth. Read more about the gold coins and older silver coins we buy.
Bullion value or collector value?
Not every coin is worth only its metal. Most gold coins, like sovereigns, Krugerrands and Britannias, are bought and sold for their gold content, and that's what our live prices reflect. But some coins are worth more than their weight in gold to a collector, because of their date, their condition, or how few were made.
We look at both. If a coin is worth more for its gold, we'll pay you our full bullion rate on the spot. If it's likely to fetch more from a collector, we'll say so, and our sister auction house, RWB Auctions, can help you reach that market. Either way you get the honest answer, not just the quickest sale.

Always know your price per gram
Before you sell to anyone, in Marlborough or beyond, the single most useful thing you can do is find out the price per gram you're being paid. A fair buyer will show you the weight, the purity and the sums behind your offer. If someone won't, that's your sign to pause.
A quick check before you sell
We publish both the live market rate and the rate we actually pay, so you can compare before you commit. Ask any buyer these three things:
- What price per gram are you paying for my carat of gold?
- How does that compare to today's market price?
- Will you show me the weight and the sums behind my offer?
You can read our fuller guide to comparing offers on the Sell Gold in Wiltshire page, or check any quote yourself with our calculator.
