How to get the best price for your gold
Getting a fair deal isn't complicated once you know what drives the price. Three things decide what your gold is worth: its purity (the carat), its weight in grams, and the live market price on the day you sell. A good buyer weighs your items accurately, tests the purity, and pays you a clear price per gram based on today's market.
A few simple steps help you get the most for your gold:
Keep everything, even the broken bits. Snapped chains, single earrings and bent rings are all worth their full gold value, so there's no need to sort or throw anything away. Don't polish or repair items before selling either, as that rarely adds to what they're worth as scrap.
Separate different carats if you can. A 9ct chain and an 18ct ring are worth very different amounts per gram, so weighing them together can work against you. We sort and weigh each carat separately, and we're happy to show you how we've done it.
Finally, always compare the price per gram, not the total. A big headline figure means little unless you know the rate behind it. That's the number that lets you compare any two offers fairly, which is exactly why we publish ours.
Getting to us from Calne
Calne is one of the closest towns to our branch, only about ten miles and a twenty minute drive away. What we buy from Calne sellers
Calne has a long history of quiet wealth. It grew rich on the wool and broadcloth trade in the 1700s, and you can still see the Georgian clothiers' houses around the green by St Mary's Church. Later, generations of families worked at the Harris bacon factory in the heart of town. Homes with roots that deep often hold jewellery, gold coins and heirlooms that have been passed down and tucked away for years.
We buy all of it. That includes broken or unworn gold jewellery, full and half sovereigns, Krugerrands and Britannias, silver, luxury watches, dental gold, and larger bullion holdings. If you've inherited a collection and aren't sure what any of it is worth, we'll value it piece by piece and explain every figure, so nothing is a mystery.
Read more about the gold coins we buy, or see the full list on our What We Buy page.
Selling inherited or estate gold
A lot of the gold we're asked to value has been inherited, and we know that selling a loved one's jewellery or coin collection can feel difficult. We take our time, treat every piece with respect, and never rush you into a decision. If it helps, we'll talk you through what each item is, what it's made of, and what it's worth, so you can decide what to keep and what to sell.
If you're dealing with an estate and need figures in writing, we also offer probate valuations. And if a piece might do better under the hammer than as scrap, our sister company RWB Auctions can help, and we'll say so honestly rather than simply buying it.
Always know your price per gram
Before you sell to anyone, in Calne or beyond, the single most useful thing you can do is find out the price per gram you're being paid. A fair buyer will show you the weight, the purity and the sums behind your offer. If someone won't, that's your sign to pause.
A quick check before you sell
We publish both the live market rate and the rate we actually pay, so you can compare before you commit. Ask any buyer these three things:
- What price per gram are you paying for my carat of gold?
- How does that compare to today's market price?
- Will you show me the weight and the sums behind my offer?
You can read our fuller guide to comparing offers on the Sell Gold in Wiltshire page, or check any quote yourself with our calculator.
What to bring when you sell
Selling gold is regulated, which is a good thing, because it keeps everyone honest and protects you as the seller. When you visit us, please bring photo ID (a driving licence or passport) and a recent proof of address, such as a utility bill or bank statement. If you're selling by post, we'll guide you through the same simple checks online. It only takes a moment, and it means we can pay you quickly and securely.
Why Calne sellers choose Gold Traders
- Trading Standards approved. We were the first precious metals company in the UK to earn Buy With Confidence approval, so our prices and process are independently checked.
- A short trip from Calne. We're about twenty minutes away in Royal Wootton Bassett, with parking close to the branch.
- Same-day payment. Whether you visit or post, we pay you the day we have your gold and you accept our offer (subject to timely authorisation).
- Full price transparency. We show the live market rate and the rate we pay. Very few buyers do both.
- Official partner of The Royal Mint. We're the only partner of The Royal Mint in the South West of the UK.
- An auction option too. If a piece could fetch more at auction, our sister company RWB Auctions can help, and we'll tell you honestly.
