Valuing gold is simpler and more open than many people expect, and we talk you through every step.

First we check the hallmark, the tiny stamp that tells us the carat. If a piece isn't clearly marked, or you're not sure, we test the metal itself to confirm its purity. Our Hallmark Wizard can help you read those marks before you even leave home.

Next we weigh each item accurately, keeping different carats apart, because a 9ct chain and an 18ct ring are worth very different amounts per gram. Then we multiply the weight by our live price per gram for that carat. That figure is your offer, with nothing held back and no hidden deductions.

If you visit the branch, we do all of this in front of you. If you sell by post, every package is opened and weighed under CCTV, so the process is just as clear and just as fair.

Should you sell at auction, or to a buyer?

Not everything is worth the most as scrap. If you have gold jewellery that's broken, worn or simply out of fashion, selling it for its metal value is usually the quickest and best way to turn it into cash, and that's exactly what we do.
