About the 1oz Platinum Britannia

With over 1,100 years of history, The Royal Mint is the original British maker of well-crafted, thoughtfully designed products, services and experiences. The Platinum Britannia, launched in 2018, completes the precious metals Britannia family alongside its gold and silver counterparts - and brings the same hallmarks of Royal Mint quality to the platinum market.

The Britannia is one of Britain's most enduring coin designs, depicting the female personification of the nation - helmeted, shield and trident in hand, with the sea behind her. The design has evolved across different artists over the years, each bringing a fresh interpretation to this iconic figure. More recent issues feature intricate security details including a latent image, micro-engraved trident pattern, and guilloche background - making the Platinum Britannia one of the most technically sophisticated bullion coins in the world.

The obverse carries the portrait of the reigning monarch. Coins issued between 2018 and 2022 feature Jody Clark's fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II - a detail that makes these earlier issues particularly interesting to collectors. From 2023, the obverse transitioned to Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the series. Both eras are equally valued for their platinum content; the year of issue makes no difference to what we pay.

Mintage of the Platinum Britannia is considerably more limited than the gold or silver versions, reflecting the narrower investor market for platinum. This relative scarcity adds a layer of collector interest alongside the investment appeal, though as with all bullion coins, our buying price reflects the metal value rather than numismatic considerations.

Yes - send as many as you like. If your coins are in a tube or capsules, leave them as they are. We'll assess each coin individually and give you a full breakdown before you confirm.

Yes. Unlike some bullion dealers who only offer buyback on their own stock, we buy platinum coins regardless of where or when you originally purchased them.

For bullion-grade platinum coins, condition has no effect on our offer - we pay based on the platinum content, not the appearance. Proof coins in pristine condition with original packaging may carry additional collector value that our standard platinum price doesn't reflect. If you have high-grade proof coins, it may be worth checking their numismatic value before deciding to sell.

Yes. As UK legal tender, Platinum Britannia coins are CGT exempt, meaning any profit from their sale is not subject to Capital Gains Tax. Other platinum coins - such as the American Eagle or Canadian Maple Leaf - are not UK legal tender and may be subject to CGT on profits above your annual allowance. We'd always recommend confirming your specific position with a tax adviser.
