About British Platinum Coins
The Royal Mint has been producing coins for over 1,100 years, making it one of the most respected minting institutions in the world. Its entry into platinum bullion came relatively recently: the Platinum Britannia was launched in 2018, joining the gold and silver Britannia as part of the UK's premier bullion coin family. Struck to .9995 fineness and carrying a face value of £100, the Platinum Britannia is legal tender in the United Kingdom.
The Britannia design has been one of Britain's most enduring coin motifs, depicting the female personification of the nation - typically helmeted, shield in hand, with the sea behind her. The reverse design has evolved over the decades, with different artists bringing their own interpretation to the figure. The obverse carries the reigning monarch's effigy, making earlier issues from 2018 to 2022 - featuring the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark - increasingly sought after by collectors.
Beyond the annual bullion Britannia, The Royal Mint also produces platinum proof coins in limited editions. These are struck to a higher finish using polished dies, often presented in premium packaging with certificates of authenticity. While proof coins command a significant premium over bullion at the point of sale, our buying price is based on the platinum content - so sellers of proof coins may wish to explore the numismatic market if their coins are in pristine condition with original packaging intact.
All Royal Mint platinum coins are struck to internationally recognised purity standards and carry clear markings confirming their metal content. This makes them straightforward to authenticate and value, and means sellers can have confidence in what they're sending.
Capital Gains Tax and British Platinum Coins
Because British platinum coins are UK legal tender, any profit made on their sale is exempt from Capital Gains Tax. This applies to the Platinum Britannia and other Royal Mint platinum issues that carry a sterling face value - and it applies regardless of the size of the profit or the quantity sold.
This is a meaningful advantage for investors who have seen significant gains since purchasing. Non-British platinum coins - such as the American Eagle or Canadian Maple Leaf - do not carry this exemption and may be subject to CGT on profits above the annual allowance.
Tax rules can and do change, and individual circumstances vary. Always confirm your position with a qualified tax adviser before making decisions based on CGT status.
How Much Are My British Platinum Coins Worth?
The value of any platinum coin is driven primarily by the live platinum spot price and the coin's platinum content. British platinum coins are all struck to .9995 fine platinum, so the calculation is straightforward: platinum content multiplied by the current market rate.
