Why Sell Platinum Bullion Coins?
Platinum is one of the rarest precious metals on Earth - significantly rarer than gold - and platinum bullion coins represent a pure, straightforward way to hold that value. Investors buy them for portfolio diversification, as a store of wealth, and sometimes simply because they appreciate the craftsmanship.
When the time comes to liquidate, selling to a specialist precious metal buyer gives you a fast, transparent route to cash. Gold Traders pays based on the live platinum price, updated daily, so you'll always know what to expect before you commit to anything.
Unlike some dealers, we don't require you to have purchased from us originally. We'll buy your platinum coins regardless of where or when you acquired them.

About Platinum Bullion Coins
Platinum is one of the world's most precious and industrially important metals. It is rarer than gold - with annual global production a fraction of that of gold - and has significant demand from the automotive, electronics, and jewellery industries, as well as from investors. This combination of scarcity and utility makes platinum a compelling store of value.
The modern platinum bullion coin market began in earnest with the introduction of the Platinum American Eagle in 1997 and the Canadian Maple Leaf shortly before. The UK joined the market relatively recently: The Royal Mint launched the Platinum Britannia in 2018, struck to .9995 fineness and carrying a face value of £100, making it legal tender in the United Kingdom.
The vast majority of platinum bullion coins are struck to .9995 fine platinum - occasionally written as 999.5 or millesimal fineness 9995. This is the standard purity for investment-grade platinum, equivalent to 99.95% pure metal. Coins marketed as .9999 fine (such as the Platinum Vienna Philharmonic) carry an even higher purity and will be tested and valued accordingly.
Platinum bullion coins are typically available in a range of denominations. The 1oz coin is the most widely traded size and the one most investors hold. Fractional sizes - 1/2oz, 1/4oz, and 1/10oz - also exist, most commonly in the American Eagle series, and are bought based on the same pricing formula: platinum content multiplied by the live platinum price.
Proof coins - struck to a higher finish with polished dies, often supplied in presentation boxes with certificates - are also bought based on their platinum content. If your proof coins carry significant collector value beyond the metal, you may wish to explore specialist numismatic buyers before committing to a scrap sale.
Platinum Britannias and Capital Gains Tax
The Platinum Britannia is legal tender in the United Kingdom, which means it carries an important tax advantage for UK investors: profits made on the sale of Platinum Britannia coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT). This means you can sell any quantity of Platinum Britannias without the gain being subject to CGT, regardless of how much profit you make.
This exemption does not apply to non-UK platinum coins. Coins such as the Platinum American Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, and Krugerrand are not UK legal tender and may be subject to CGT on any profit above your annual CGT allowance.
Tax rules can change and individual circumstances vary. We'd always encourage you to confirm your position with a qualified tax adviser before making decisions based on CGT status.
How Much Are My Platinum Coins Worth?
The value of a platinum bullion coin is based on three things:
- The platinum content - weight and purity
- The current live platinum spot price, which moves with the global market
- The rate Gold Traders is paying on the day
Our platinum buying prices are updated daily in line with the market. To see today's price for a specific coin, select from the list above and visit the individual coin page. You'll find a live price and full details on each one.

Once you authorise the payment, we process it the same day - straight to your bank account. No waiting. No hidden deductions. No pressure to accept.
Tips for Sending Platinum Coins
Platinum coins are durable, but it's worth taking a little care when packing them for postage. If your coins are in capsules or tubes, leave them as they are - there's no need to remove them before sending. If you have proof coins in presentation boxes or with certificates of authenticity, include these with your parcel. They won't affect our platinum valuation, but having them intact gives you options if you later decide to explore numismatic value.
