Live gold prices for Truro sellers

We pay these rates per gram for gold jewellery, and they move with the market through the day. When you sell, we'll show you which row each piece falls into.

Reading the marks on inherited jewellery

Older jewellery often has different marks from modern pieces. Before 1975, gold was usually stamped with its carat, like 9 or 18. Today you'll see a number showing parts per thousand, like 375 or 750. This table helps you match the mark to the metal and today's price.

Mark you might see What it means Price we pay per gram
9 or 375 9ct gold £34.48
18 or 750 18ct gold £68.96
22 or 916 22ct gold £84.23
Sterling, a lion, or 925 Sterling silver £0.89
PLAT or 950 Platinum £30.26

Can't find a mark, or can't read it? Try our Hallmark Wizard, or bring the piece in and we'll test it for you.

Clearing a loved one's jewellery box

Selling inherited jewellery can be hard. Some pieces mean a lot, and it's not always clear what's valuable and what isn't. We never rush you, and there's no pressure to sell anything.

We'll sort items into gold, silver and costume jewellery, test anything unmarked, and tell you what each piece is worth. Then you decide what to keep, what to sell, and what might do better at auction.

A simple plan for an estate

  1. Gather everything in one place, including broken pieces and single earrings.
  2. Set aside anything with sentimental value that the family wants to keep.
  3. Ask us for a free valuation of the rest, or a written probate valuation if you need one.
  4. Decide which pieces to sell for their metal and which to send to auction.

Probate valuations for Truro estates

Truro is Cornwall's only city and the county's centre for law and local government, so many estates in the area are handled by solicitors based here.

If an executor or solicitor needs figures in writing, we offer probate valuations. If a signed piece or a rare coin is worth more to collectors, our sister company RWB Auctions can help, and our Bodmin branch can arrange it.

A city built on tin and trade

Truro was one of the stannary towns named in a royal charter of 1305. Tin from the surrounding mines was brought here to be tested and taxed before it could be sold.

Wealth from mining and trade paid for the Georgian houses of Lemon Street. Truro became a city in 1877, and its cathedral was built between 1880 and 1910. A lot of family jewellery in the area dates from those prosperous years.

Read the small print before you post an estate

When you're clearing an estate, the gold can add up to a lot of money. That's why it's worth reading a postal buyer's terms before you send anything, especially if they don't publish their rates.

Some buyers' terms include a fee if you turn their offer down, or make you pay the return postage. Some set a deadline, and if you don't reply in time, the offer counts as accepted. Others offer "instant payment", which can mean giving up your right to say no.

None of this matters much if you know the price before you post. It matters a great deal if you only find out after.

How we handle it

Our price per gram is on this page before you send anything. Today we pay £34.48 per gram for 9ct gold. If you don't like our offer, we return your items free of charge.

For a large estate, you can also bring everything to our Bodmin branch and watch us test and weigh it.

Your questions answered

We've compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions. If there's something we haven't covered, please call us & we'll be happy to help. Read all FAQs.

No. Cleaning, polishing or repairing old jewellery won't increase its gold value, and harsh cleaning can damage pieces that might be worth more at auction. Bring them in as they are.

Yes. Gold Traders provides written probate valuations for gold, silver, coins and jewellery. Executors and solicitors in Truro and across Cornwall can contact our Bodmin branch on 01208 420331 to arrange one.

A 375 mark means the item is 9ct gold, which is 37.5% pure gold. Jewellery made before 1975 may just be stamped 9 or 9ct instead. Both mean the same thing.

You can sell inherited gold jewellery from Truro at Gold Traders' Bodmin branch, about 40 minutes away, or by post. We test and weigh every piece, explain what each one is worth, and never pressure you to sell.
