  • Bodmin Branch: Due to some critical maintenance work, our Bodmin branch is unavoidably closed from 19 Oct to 26 Oct. We plan to reopen on 26 Oct. The Bodmin telephone number is still active and we can facilitate home visits for large collections by appointment.

Our counter operating hours at our Royal Wootton Bassett branch are 9:30am to 2:30pm. Can you help us with our campaign to introduce regulation into the precious metals market?

Selling gold you bought on holiday

Lots of Newquay jewellery boxes hold gold picked up abroad. A chain from a holiday in Turkey, a bracelet from Dubai, or a ring from a trip to the States. Gold from other countries is often a different carat from the gold sold in UK shops, and it may have no UK hallmark at all.

That's fine. We test it with an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) machine, which reads the metal content in seconds without marking the piece. Here's what we pay for carats you're likely to find in holiday gold.

Carat Where it is common Price we pay per gram
8ct (333) Germany and parts of Europe £30.62
10ct (416) USA and Canada £38.25
14ct (585) USA and much of Europe £53.79
21ct (875) The Middle East £80.46
22ct (916) India and Turkey £84.23

Higher-carat gold, like 21ct and 22ct, is worth a lot more per gram than the 9ct gold most common in the UK. So a light chain from abroad can be worth more than it looks.

From pilchard harbour to surf town

Newquay started life as a fishing village. On the headland above the harbour you can still see the Huer's Hut, where a lookout once watched for shoals of pilchards and raised the cry to send the boats out.

Today the town is better known for its beaches and surf. But plenty of Newquay homes still hold family jewellery passed down over the years, alongside newer pieces bought on travels further afield. We're happy to value all of it, old or new.

Gold-plated or solid gold?

Holiday jewellery isn't always what it seems. Some pieces are gold-plated, which means a thin layer of gold over a cheaper metal. Plating has very little gold in it, so it has little scrap value.

Rolled gold is different. It has a thicker layer of gold bonded to the base metal, and we do buy it at our rolled gold rate. If you're not sure which you have, bring it in. Our XRF test tells us in seconds, and there's no charge for checking.

Why Newquay sellers choose Gold Traders

  • Trading Standards approved. We were the first precious metals company in the UK to earn Buy With Confidence approval.
  • Unmarked gold tested properly. Our XRF machine measures the gold in foreign and unhallmarked pieces without damaging them.
  • Two prices shown. We show the live market value and the price we pay. Today we pay 91.6% of the market price for scrap gold.
  • Paid fast. In branch, we usually pay the same day. By post, we pay within 24 hours of your parcel arriving.
  • Official Partner of The Royal Mint®. We are the only partner of The Royal Mint in the South West of the UK.

Why a missing price list hurts holiday gold sellers most

Selling gold bought abroad already comes with one unknown: the carat. If the buyer doesn't publish their rates either, you're now guessing twice.

Some buyers only tell you what they'll pay after your gold is in their hands. With high-carat gold, like 21ct or 22ct, that's where a low offer costs you most. The more pure gold a piece holds, the more every missing percentage point is worth.

Here's a real example. A 10g 22ct chain from Turkey has a market value of £919.99 today. We'd pay £842.30 for it, and we show you both numbers before you sell.

Before you sell holiday gold anywhere

  1. Ask what carat they've found, and how they tested it.
  2. Ask for their price per gram for that exact carat.
  3. Get both answers in writing before you agree to anything.
