What a gold watch case is worth

Old gold watches, especially pocket watches, often have solid gold cases. When a watch is sold for its gold, we pay for the weight of gold in the case. Here are today's rates for the carats we see most in watch cases.

Case carat Hallmark Price we pay per gram
9ct 375 £34.48
14ct 585 £53.79
18ct 750 £68.96

A working watch from a well-known maker can be worth much more than its gold. That's why we look at every watch as a watch first. See more on our gold watches page.

Selling a gold watch: what to know

Don't take a watch apart before selling it. Leave the movement, glass and strap in place. We'll weigh the gold separately ourselves, and an intact watch is worth more if it can be sold as a working piece.

Watch out for cases stamped with the words gold filled, rolled gold, or a warranty like 20 years. These are not solid gold, although we can still buy rolled gold at our rolled rate.

We buy luxury watches, including Rolex, Omega and Breitling. If yours might do better at auction, we'll tell you, and our Bodmin branch can send it to our sister company, RWB Auctions.

The far west's coinage town

By the time of Charles II, Penzance had become one of Cornwall's coinage towns, where tin was tested and taxed before it could be sold. That made it an important trading centre for the mines of West Penwith.

Sir Humphry Davy, the scientist who invented the miners' safety lamp, was born in Penzance in 1778. His statue still stands at the top of Market Jew Street. Down on the seafront, the Jubilee Pool has drawn swimmers since 1935.

Trust badges and big claims: how to check them

Some gold buyers' websites are full of reassurance. You might see counters of gold bought today, feeds of recent sales, or review scores shown as pictures. You can't check any of these yourself.

We've even seen a buyer claim to have won an independent test run by a household-name comparison website. When we asked that website, it confirmed the test never took place.

Not every claim like this is false. But the one claim you can always check yourself is a published price.

Check a buyer the simple way

  1. Look for a price per gram labelled as what they pay, not the market price.
  2. Read their reviews on the review site itself, not just on their own pages.
  3. Check any award or test they mention with the organisation named.

For the record, we pay £68.96 per gram for 18ct gold today, a common carat for gold watch cases.

Selling gold elsewhere in Cornwall

We buy gold right across the county. If you're not in Penzance, one of these local guides may be closer to home.
