A town of engineers and miners

Camborne has a proud place in the history of mining and engineering. On Christmas Eve 1801, Richard Trevithick drove his steam road engine, the Puffing Devil, up Camborne Hill. Nearby Dolcoath mine became known as the Queen of Cornish Mines.

The Camborne School of Mines opened in 1888 and trained mining engineers who went on to work all over the world. Many Camborne miners went to the gold fields of South Africa. A house in the town, Crown Reef House, is even named after a South African gold mine.

That history still shows up in local families. We often see South African Krugerrands and other gold coins from Camborne homes.

Old lab equipment can be valuable

Laboratories use platinum because it doesn't melt or react easily. Old crucibles, dishes and thermocouple wire can contain a surprising amount of it.

If you have lab scrap from a retired career, a clear-out or a closed workshop, don't throw it away. We'll test it with our X-ray fluorescence (XRF) machine to find out exactly what metal it holds. Read more about the crucibles and lab scrap we buy.

Selling dental gold

Old crowns and bridges are often made from a gold alloy, and they're worth selling. Many people keep them in a drawer for years without knowing they have any value.

You don't need to clean them or remove anything first. We'll test the metal content and pay you for the gold and other precious metals we find. See our dental gold page for more.

Platinum or white gold?

Platinum and white gold look almost the same, but they're worth different amounts. Platinum is usually marked PLAT or 950. White gold is marked with a gold carat, like 750 for 18ct or 375 for 9ct.

If the mark has worn away, our XRF test tells the two apart in seconds, without scratching the piece.

Searching for gold buyers in Camborne? Check who you're dealing with

Search for gold buyers in Camborne and some of the top results come from postal companies with no office anywhere near the town. Some even list Camborne's post offices, so the page feels local.

Selling by post is fine. We offer it too, and we'll tell you straight that our nearest branch is in Bodmin, about 36 miles away. What matters is whether the page tells you what you'll be paid.

Look out for big claims like "we pay more than Camborne gold buyers" or "the UK's highest paying gold buyer". If there's no price per gram next to those words, you have no way to check them.

A 30 second test for any gold buyer's page

Look for the words we pay next to a price per gram. Here's ours for 9ct gold today: the market value is £37.66 per gram, and we pay £34.48. That's 91.6% of the market price, shown openly so you can compare.

If a buyer won't show you that number before you send your gold, ask yourself why.
