About the Australian 1oz Silver Kangaroo
The Australian Silver Kangaroo is a product of The Perth Mint, one of the world's most respected precious metals refineries. The Perth Mint was established in 1899 as the last of three Australian colonial branches of the UK's Royal Mint, and has been owned by the Government of Western Australia ever since. It has been a member of the London Bullion Market Association's Good Delivery List since 1919 - one of the most trusted credentials in the global bullion industry.
The modern 1oz Silver Kangaroo bullion coin was introduced in 2016 and quickly established itself as a major force in the global silver market. Struck in .9999 fine silver - four nines purity - it matches the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf as one of the purest silver coins available, and exceeds the purity of many comparable coins including the Silver Britannia (.999) and the American Silver Eagle (.999). Each coin carries a face value of $1 AUD, confirming its status as Australian legal tender backed by the Australian government.
What sets the Silver Kangaroo apart from most other bullion coins is its annually changing reverse design. Each year, The Perth Mint releases a new artistic interpretation of Australia's most iconic animal - the red kangaroo - giving the series a collectible quality that standard bullion coins rarely achieve. While the design changes, the coin's fundamental specifications remain consistent: one troy ounce of .9999 fine silver, year after year.
The reverse also features a subtle but important security element: a micro-laser engraved letter "A" concealed within the first letter of the word "Australian" in the coin's legend. This mark is invisible to the naked eye and requires magnification to detect, providing a reliable method of authentication and making the Silver Kangaroo one of the most secure silver coins in production.
The obverse of the coin has evolved with the British monarchy. Early issues from 2016 featured Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. From 2024, the coin carries a portrait of King Charles III, continuing the tradition of royal imagery on Australian legal tender. The 2024 issues also carry a special "P125" privy mark on the reverse, marking the 125th anniversary of The Perth Mint - making that year's coins particularly notable for collectors.
Coins are typically sold in tubes of 25, with larger quantities available as mint boxes or monster boxes of 250 coins. We are happy to receive coins in any format - loose, tubed, or capsulled - and will handle them carefully throughout the testing and valuation process.
One important point to note for UK sellers: Australian Silver Kangaroo coins are not exempt from Capital Gains Tax in the UK. As they are not UK legal tender, any gains made on disposal may be subject to CGT. If this is a consideration for you, we would recommend speaking with a tax adviser before selling.
Whether you hold early 2016 issues or the most recent release, we assess every coin accurately based on its silver content and make the process as straightforward as possible.
