Introducing The Full Sovereign
Some gold buyers may wrongly feel this flagship bullion coin requires no introduction. This, however, ignores that Sovereigns can often be found in the hands of those who may not have previously encountered a 'chief coin of the world'. We firmly believe that offering an informed overview of its history and specifications ensures understanding and - most importantly - can help you to secure the fairest possible price.
The Full Sovereign is nothing less than one of the most popular and enduring gold coins. After all it is, since its modern reintroduction in 1817 under the Tudor Dynasty, a familiar sight in investment portfolios and numismatic collections alike.

The Full Sovereign's Specification
Much of the popularity of the British Sovereign is thanks to its reliable and accurate specifications, allowing investors to buy and sell with confidence for centuries. Therefore, this is also one useful way to help determine if your Full Sovereign is real.
The modern Full Sovereign holds a 22.05 millimetre diameter. For reference this is, to the naked eye, very similar to the 22.03 millimetre diameter held by the 1p coin. Sovereigns are also struck in 22ct gold: an alloy that is 91.6% pure by composition. This means that, given the Full Sovereign's 7.98 gram gross weight, each coin contains 7.31 grams of pure gold.
Lastly, do not be disheartened if your coin is not traditional yellow gold in colour. Many examples, especially 21st century mintages, are alloyed with copper which produces a rose or reddish finish.
Gold Traders will authenticate your Full Sovereign in our Wiltshire office via our postal service, before offering you our best price. To access this service simply fill out a claim form online or get in touch.
Design Of The Full Sovereign
The impressiveness of the Sovereign does not end at its robust specifications. The design, too, has helped cement this coin as a favourite among investors and collectors. In fact, this is another reliable starting point to tell if you are dealing with a real UK Royal Mint Full Sovereign.
On the obverse, or 'heads', side should sit the definitive bust of the ruling monarch from your coin's mintage year. For example, on the 2025 full Sovereign is King Charles III as regally sculpted by Martin Jennings.
The royal depiction on the obverse is often complimented by a reverse displaying a neoclassical masterwork: Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the Dragon. This muscular design, used from 1817, was a marked shift from familiar heraldry and has ever since served as a differentiating marker of The Royal Mint's flagship coin.
This artistic quality on both faces means some Full Sovereigns in fantastic condition may hold an above average value in the collectors market. Our in-house numismatists are best-placed to inspect such top quality examples and ensure a fair price is offered - they will also, no doubt, thank you for the pleasure!
Which Full Sovereigns Are Worth The Most?
Among the most valuable Sovereigns are the pre-Tudor examples from as early as the sixteenth century. Meanwhile, 'modern' examples can also enjoy high valuations, especially if they were minted under King George III, King George IV, and King William IV. Perhaps rarest of all is the Sovereign of Edward VIII, minted in the short period prior to his abdication in the 1930s.

All genuine British gold Sovereigns are struck in 22ct gold. However, fake Sovereigns are relatively common and can contain varying amounts of gold or none at all!
The value of a Sovereign ring consists of two elements - the ring mount and the coin. The first thing you need to do is weigh the complete ring in grams.
The Sovereign will weigh 7.98g, so it's easy to value that. Today, we would pay £483.83 for the coin in the ring. This amount is slightly lower than our standard Sovereign rates because the coin will be considered 'ex-jewellery' (showing evidence of been mounted in jewellery).
Taking the gross weight of the ring and subtracting 8g will give you the weight of the ring mount. It's almost certainly 9ct gold, for which we're paying £24.82 / gram today.
When initially struck, a full Sovereign will weigh precisely 7.98 grams. This has been consistent since the introduction of the 'modern' Sovereign in 1817.
