Product Description
After the one-off Golden Jubilee design of 2002, the 2003 Sovereign returned to Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon. The Royal Mint struck 43,230 bullion Sovereigns dated 2003.
That's one of the lower mintages of the modern bullion series.
2000s bullion mintages
- 2001: 49,462
- 2002: 75,264
- 2003: 43,230
- 2004: 30,688
These small numbers make the early 2000s dates less common than older Sovereigns, though their value still rests mainly on their gold.

How the Sovereign started
The Sovereign as we know it today began in 1817. It was part of the Great Recoinage of 1816 and had a face value of one pound (20 shillings).
The classic reverse
Pistrucci's St George and the dragon was first used on the Sovereign in 1817 and has become one of the most famous coin designs in the world.
Consistent since 1817
A full Sovereign weighs 7.98 grams and contains 7.32 grams of pure gold. This hasn't changed in over 200 years. What does change is the portrait, which shows the monarch of the day.
The Royal Mint paused bullion Sovereigns after 1982 and brought them back in 2000. They've been struck every year since.
Why the Sovereign is still popular
Today, the Sovereign is still UK legal tender and is still struck by The Royal Mint. Being VAT-free and CGT-exempt for UK residents, it's hugely popular.
