Product Description

The 2002 Sovereign is one of the few modern bullion Sovereigns without St George on the reverse. It was made to mark 50 years since the Queen came to the throne in 1952.

The Royal Mint struck 75,264 bullion Sovereigns dated 2002.

Timothy Noad's Golden Jubilee design

Heraldic artist Timothy Noad designed a crowned shield of the Royal Arms for the reverse. It was used on the Sovereign for 2002 only, which makes it popular with collectors.

Noad later designed another one-off Sovereign reverse in 2005, and the Royal Arms design used in 2022 for the Platinum Jubilee.

Design of the 2002 Sovereign

  • Obverse (front): Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, her fourth coinage portrait. It was introduced in 1998 and used on Sovereigns until 2015.
  • Reverse (back): Timothy Noad's crowned shield of the Royal Arms, used for the Golden Jubilee year only.

Denomination Information

A short history of the gold Sovereign

Britain's modern Sovereign dates from 1817, following the Great Recoinage of 1816. Worth one pound, or 20 shillings, it was quickly trusted by traders across the globe.

Pistrucci's famous reverse

Since 1817, Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon has been the Sovereign's signature design. Few coin designs have lasted so long.

The Sovereign's specification

Sovereigns are still made to the same standard as the first coins, weighing 7.98 grams and containing 7.32 grams of pure gold. Only the portrait moves with the times.

After 1982, bullion Sovereigns weren't struck again until 2000. Since then, The Royal Mint has issued them every year, with the portrait updated as new designs were introduced.

Popular with UK buyers

Sovereigns remain UK legal tender and are still produced by The Royal Mint. No VAT and no Capital Gains Tax for UK residents make them a popular choice.
