Product Description

The Royal Mint struck only 49,462 bullion Sovereigns dated 2001. That's well under half the 2000 figure of 129,069.

Bullion mintages stayed low for most of the 2000s, which makes these early modern dates harder to find than the millions struck in the 1960s and 1970s.

A modern low mintage

From 2010 onwards, yearly bullion mintages often topped 200,000. By comparison, the 2001 is a scarce modern date.

Even so, its value is based mainly on its gold content, which keeps it within reach for most buyers.

Denomination Information

Origins of the Sovereign

The modern Sovereign was born in 1817, a year after the Great Recoinage of 1816. Its face value was one pound, or 20 shillings.

A famous image

Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon first appeared on the Sovereign in 1817. More than 200 years later, it's still the design most people picture.

What has stayed the same

Every full Sovereign weighs 7.98 grams and holds 7.32 grams of pure gold, just as in 1817. The portrait is updated to show the reigning monarch.

The Royal Mint paused bullion Sovereigns after 1982 and brought them back in 2000. They've been struck every year since.

Still in demand

The Sovereign is still struck today and remains UK legal tender. Its fixed gold content and tax benefits keep demand strong.

It's scarcer than most modern dates, with under 50,000 struck. That's a small number next to the millions made in earlier decades, but its value is still based mainly on its gold.
