Product Description
The 2000 Sovereign marked the return of the bullion Sovereign after 18 years. Between 1983 and 1999, Sovereigns were only made as proofs for collectors.
The Royal Mint struck 129,069 bullion Sovereigns dated 2000. That's tiny compared with the millions made in the 1970s, but it began a run of bullion Sovereigns that continues every year to this day.
A millennium Sovereign
Being dated 2000, this coin is popular as a millennium keepsake as well as a way to own gold.
It was also the first bullion Sovereign to carry Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of the Queen, which had been introduced on UK coins in 1998.
Design of the 2000 Sovereign
- Obverse (front): Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, her fourth coinage portrait. It was introduced in 1998 and used on Sovereigns until 2015.
- Reverse (back): Benedetto Pistrucci's St George on horseback slaying the dragon, first used on the Sovereign in 1817, with the date 2000.

Denomination Information
The Sovereign's beginnings
In 1817, following the Great Recoinage of 1816, Britain issued the first modern gold Sovereigns. Each was worth one pound, or 20 shillings.
An enduring design
St George and the dragon, engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci, has been linked with the Sovereign since 1817. The Royal Mint still uses it today.
The coin's standard
Since 1817, each full Sovereign has weighed 7.98 grams and contained 7.32 grams of pure gold. The portrait is updated for each reign.
After 1982, bullion Sovereigns weren't struck again until 2000. Since then, The Royal Mint has issued them every year, with the portrait updated as new designs were introduced.
The Sovereign today
Sovereigns are still made by The Royal Mint and remain UK legal tender. Their tax advantages keep them a favourite way to buy gold in the UK.
