Product Description

The Royal Mint struck just 30,688 bullion Sovereigns dated 2004. Only the 2007 issue, with 27,628, had a lower published bullion mintage in the modern series.

That makes the 2004 one of the scarcer modern dates for collectors building a run.

Why modern mintages were so low

In the early 2000s, bullion Sovereigns were made in much smaller numbers than in the 1970s, when millions were struck each year.

Mintages rose sharply from 2010, when more than 240,000 were struck.

Denomination Information

The Sovereign since 1817

Britain introduced the modern gold Sovereign in 1817, following the Great Recoinage of 1816. At one pound (20 shillings), it became a coin trusted internationally.

St George and the dragon

Pistrucci designed St George slaying the dragon for the first Sovereigns in 1817. It has been used on the coin for most of the two centuries since.

How the Sovereign has changed

For over 200 years, the Sovereign has kept the same standard of 7.98 grams, with 7.32 grams of pure gold. New portraits appear as monarchs change.

After 1982, bullion Sovereigns weren't struck again until 2000. Since then, The Royal Mint has issued them every year, with the portrait updated as new designs were introduced.

A modern favourite

More than 200 years on, the Sovereign is still made by The Royal Mint and is still legal tender. UK investors value its VAT and CGT exemptions.
