From 1980 on, the South African government has minted a 4 coin Kruger Set that includes the one ounce, one half ounce, one quarter ounce and one tenth ounce Krugerrand coins. Due to the fact that these coins are primarily intended as bullion coins and not designed for beauty or daily use as currency, the Krugerrand coins all share the same design and 22 carat gold composition. In fact, the coins have sometimes been described as lumps of gold with a fixed weight and value.
The coins of the four coin Kruger set have the following dimensions:
- The 1 ounce or 10 Rand Kruger has a diameter of 32.61 to 32.77 millimeters and a thickness of 2.74 to 2.84 millimeters.
- The 1/2 ounce or 5 Rand Kruger has a diameter of 26.93 to 27.07 millimeters and a thickness of 2.115 to 2.215 millimeters.
- The 1/25 ounce or 2.5 Rand Kruger has a diameter of 21.94 to 22.06 millimeters and a thickness of 1.788 to 1.88 millimeters.
- The 1/10 ounce or 1 Rand Kruger has a diameter of 16.45 to 16.55 millimeters and a thickness of 1.25 to 1.35 millimeters.
To account for these variances, the mint allows a "remedy", a small additional amount of gold added to the alloy to compensate for the different thickness and diameters produced in the pressing of the coins.
All of the coins bear an identical design with the exception of the various denominations being listed on the reverse side of the coin with the Springbok design. The front face of the coin displays the image of the coins namesake, President Kruger.
