While Sovereign sets are traditionally issued as a 4 coin set, in 2009 the Royal Mint unveiled a new coin, the Quarter Sovereign. From that year on, the Quarter Sovereign has been issued as one of the coins in a five coin Sovereign.
To date, there have been three issues of the five coin Sovereign sets, in 2009 (The first year the Five Coin Sovereign Set was issued and also the year that the Quarter Sovereign first became available.), 2010, and 2011. With the good response from the public, it can be assumed that the Royal Mint will continue to produce this coin collection on into the future.
The five coins representing the Sovereign family of coins are included in this set. Struck using the original tooling of the coins designer, Pistrucci, from the original dies, this set of five coins is truly a bit of beauty and history rolled into one. These Sovereign coins are the:
- £5 Crown - weighing 39.94 Grams, with a diameter of 38.61 millimeters.
- £2 Double Sovereign - weighing 15.98 Grams, with a diameter of 28.40 millimeters.
- Full Sovereign - weighing 7.98 Grams, with a diameter of 22.05 millimeters.
- Half Sovereign - weighing 3.99 Grams, with a diameter of 19.30 millimeters.
- Quarter Sovereign - with a weight of 1.997 Grams and diameter of 13.50 millimeters.
