First minted during the reign of King Henry VII in the year 1485, the Double Sovereign probably was not intended for general circulation. In actuality, the size and weight of this coin rendered it effectively useless for common trade. It is far more likely that the coins were actually created for presentations. It has even been rumored that the intention of the coin makers was to create a triple weight, or treble, Sovereign.
While there are several design variations for the modern day £2 Double Sovereign, the most commonly found coin design has its roots embedded deeply in the past. In existence since 1820, the front face of the Modern £2 coin / Double Sovereign bears the same design of the Sovereign coins and the reverse side of the coin being marked with Benedetto Pistrucci's version of Saint George slaying the dragon.
While the £2 Double Sovereign is a beautiful coin, it was quite large and heavy for a currency coin. This has made the Double Sovereign a popular choice among investors and coin collectors but it has greatly deterred its usage as a common coin for use in trade.
£2 Double Sovereigns have a diameter of 28.4 millimeters and a weight of 15.98 grams. They are crafted from 22 carat gold and the actual gold content on the coin is 0.4707 troy ounces.
