Product Description

A 250g bar is a good middle size for silver. It holds about eight ounces of silver in one piece, so you can buy a worthwhile amount without the larger outlay of a 500g or 1kg bar.

Every bar in this listing is pre-owned, so it has had a previous owner. That doesn't change the silver, which is exactly the same as in a new bar.

Why choose a 250g silver bar?

  • 250 grams (about 8.04 troy oz) of silver, at least 999 fine
  • A useful amount of silver in a single bar
  • Fewer items to store than the same weight in 1oz bars
  • Sold under the VAT margin scheme

Which bar will I receive?

We choose the best value 250g bar we have in stock when you order. Our pre-owned bars come from a range of recognised refiners, so the shape, finish and markings vary from bar to bar. Each one is stamped with its weight and purity.

Condition

Pre-owned silver bars can show light marks from handling, and some may have toning. Toning happens naturally as silver reacts with the air. It's only on the surface and has no effect on the silver content.

Packaging

Some bars arrive sealed in their original packaging, while others come loose. We pack every order carefully so it reaches you safely.

Checked before sale

Our team checks every pre-owned bar before it's listed. Any bar we can't verify is never offered for sale.

Delivery Information

Every order goes out by Royal Mail Special Delivery, with full insurance and tracking.

Orders placed before 1pm, Monday to Friday, are normally dispatched the same day, subject to stock. Our pre-owned stock changes often, and every bar is checked before it leaves us.

If you'd like to collect, choose 'Click & Collect' at checkout and you won't pay postage. Your order will wait for you at our Royal Wootton Bassett branch, and we'll email you when it's ready. Please bring official photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence.

We accept UK debit cards and bank transfers, but not credit cards.

Orders are for UK customers only.

Investing Information

VAT and pre-owned silver

New silver bars carry VAT at the standard rate on the full price. Because these bars are pre-owned, we sell them under the VAT margin scheme, which means VAT is only charged on our margin.

Capital Gains Tax

Silver bars aren't legal tender, so they're not exempt from Capital Gains Tax. CGT only applies if you sell at a profit and your total gains for that tax year go over your annual allowance.

If CGT matters to you, UK legal tender silver coins such as our best value 1oz Silver Britannias are exempt.

Silver price movements

Silver's price can rise and fall more quickly than gold's. A large share of silver is used by industry, so demand from manufacturing plays a big part in its price.

Selling later

When you sell, what you receive will follow the silver price at the time. Gold Traders buys silver too, and you can view our latest silver prices online.

Please note: we can explain how tax applies to this bar, but we can't give personal financial advice. Please do your own research, and speak to a qualified adviser if you need to, before you invest.

Denomination Information

How much silver is in 250g?

Precious metals are usually priced in troy ounces, which weigh 31.1 grams each. A 250g bar weighs just over eight troy ounces, about 8.04 troy oz.

Cast or minted?

Larger silver bars are often cast, which means molten silver is poured into a mould. Cast bars have a slightly rough, rustic finish. Minted bars are stamped from a sheet of silver and have sharp edges and a smooth surface. Bars of this size can be either.

Gram bars and ounce bars

Silver bars are made in both gram and troy ounce sizes. Gram sizes, such as 100g, 250g, 500g and 1kg, are common with European refiners. Ounce sizes are more common in North America.

Why the 250g size?

The 250g bar sits neatly between smaller 100g bars and larger 500g bars. It's a convenient way to hold a meaningful amount of silver without tying up too much money in a single bar.

A 250g bar weighs just over eight troy ounces (about 8.04 troy oz). At 999 fine, it holds roughly 249.75g of pure silver.

A 250g bar holds about eight ounces of silver in a single piece, so there are fewer items to store. Smaller 1oz bars let you sell a little at a time. Which suits you depends on your own plans, and we can't give personal financial advice.

Yes, through Click & Collect. For security and stock reasons we don't make walk-in sales, so place your order online and select 'Click & Collect' at checkout to avoid postage.

Collection is from our Royal Wootton Bassett branch once we've emailed to say your order is ready. Please bring official photo ID. Payment is by UK debit card or bank transfer, not credit card.

It depends on the bar. Some arrive sealed in their original packaging and others come loose. Every order is packed securely before it's sent.

Order before 1pm, Monday to Friday, and if the bar is in stock we'll usually dispatch it the same day by Royal Mail Special Delivery, fully insured and tracked.

No. Silver bars aren't legal tender, so they don't qualify for the CGT exemption. CGT is only due if you sell at a profit and your total gains for that tax year are above your annual allowance.

You can pay by UK debit card or bank transfer. Credit cards, Amex and business payment cards aren't accepted.

Only on our margin. Silver isn't exempt from VAT in the UK, but pre-owned bars are sold under the VAT margin scheme, so VAT is worked out on our margin rather than the full price. There's nothing extra to pay at checkout.
