About this product
The 1963 Gold Sovereign was struck in large numbers, with 7.4 million made by The Royal Mint. It pairs Mary Gillick's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon, in 22 carat gold.
Each coin contains 7.32 grams of pure gold. As UK legal tender, it's VAT-free and exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. Every coin is graded and tested in-house.

The 1963 Sovereign has one of the highest mintages of the Gillick series. The Royal Mint struck 7,400,000 of them in London, a big increase on the 3,000,000 made in 1962.
Only the 1958 Sovereign, with about 8.7 million, had a higher mintage among Gillick Sovereigns. That makes the 1963 one of the easier Gillick dates to find.
These coins weren't made for spending in Britain. They were struck to meet demand for gold Sovereigns abroad, especially in Greece and the Middle East.
Supplying large numbers of genuine coins also helped undercut forgers, who had been making fake Sovereigns to sell at a profit.
We only offer 1963 Sovereigns graded Very Fine (VF) or better. They're pre-owned, so expect light signs of handling, but the details remain sharp.
We test each coin in-house before sale and send it in a clear coin flip. The photos show the type of coin you'll receive, so yours may vary slightly.

The Sovereign as we know it today began in 1817. It was part of the Great Recoinage of 1816 and had a face value of one pound (20 shillings).
Pistrucci's St George and the dragon was first used on the Sovereign in 1817 and has become one of the most famous coin designs in the world.
A full Sovereign weighs 7.98 grams and contains 7.32 grams of pure gold. This hasn't changed in over 200 years. What does change is the portrait, which shows the monarch of the day.
After the First World War began in 1914, Sovereigns stopped circulating in Britain. They returned as bullion coins in 1957, carrying Mary Gillick's portrait of the young Queen until 1968.
Today, the Sovereign is still UK legal tender and is still struck by The Royal Mint. Being VAT-free and CGT-exempt for UK residents, it's hugely popular.

No. With 7.4 million made, the 1963 is one of the more plentiful Gillick dates. Most of its value comes from its gold content, which makes it a popular choice for buyers who want a genuine dated Sovereign.
