About this product
The 1962 Gold Sovereign marked the return of the Sovereign after two years with none struck. Made by The Royal Mint in 22 carat gold, it carries Mary Gillick's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon.
It holds 7.32 grams of pure gold and is UK legal tender, so it's free from VAT and Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. We grade and test every coin before it's sent.

The 1962 Sovereign restarted production of Queen Elizabeth II's bullion Sovereigns. The Royal Mint struck none in 1960 or 1961, so this was the first new Sovereign for three years.
The Royal Mint made 3,000,000 Sovereigns dated 1962 at its Tower Hill site in London. Like the 1957 to 1959 coins, they were made to supply genuine Sovereigns to markets overseas.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Sovereigns were in strong demand in Greece and the Middle East, where they sold for more than their gold value. That made them a target for forgers.
By issuing genuine new coins, The Royal Mint helped meet demand and reduce the profit in faking them. Production continued every year from 1962 until 1968.
Our 1962 Sovereigns are pre-owned coins graded Very Fine (VF) or better. You can expect light wear, with the portrait and St George still well defined.
Each coin is tested by our team, then supplied in a clear coin flip. The images are representative, so your coin may differ a little.

Because it's legal tender in the UK, the Sovereign is free from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. Many people find this useful when adding to their gold over time.
Because every Sovereign holds the same amount of gold, it's easy to value. That's why they're so simple to sell on.

Britain's modern Sovereign dates from 1817, following the Great Recoinage of 1816. Worth one pound, or 20 shillings, it was quickly trusted by traders across the globe.
Since 1817, Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon has been the Sovereign's signature design. Few coin designs have lasted so long.
Sovereigns are still made to the same standard as the first coins, weighing 7.98 grams and containing 7.32 grams of pure gold. Only the portrait moves with the times.
Sovereigns left everyday use in Britain after the First World War began in 1914. The Royal Mint brought them back as bullion coins in 1957, with Mary Gillick's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II used until 1968.
Sovereigns remain UK legal tender and are still produced by The Royal Mint. No VAT and no Capital Gains Tax for UK residents make them a popular choice.

The Royal Mint simply didn't strike any Sovereigns in those two years. Production of Gillick Sovereigns resumed with the 1962 issue and then continued every year until 1968.
