Product Description

A quarter ounce platinum bar is a popular middle ground. It holds more platinum than a gram bar but costs far less than a full ounce, so it's a comfortable size for first-time and regular buyers alike.

These bars come from our Best Value range. They've had a previous owner, but the platinum hasn't changed. What does change is the price, as pre-owned bars normally carry a smaller premium than new ones.

Why buy a 1/4oz platinum bar?

Platinum is priced around the world in troy ounces. A quarter ounce bar makes it easy to work out what your platinum is worth at any moment.

  • A quarter troy ounce (7.78g) of platinum, at least 999.5 fine
  • Four bars add up to a full troy ounce
  • A lower outlay than a 1oz bar, with more metal than gram bars
  • Compact and easy to keep safe

Tested before it's listed

Our team checks each bar using XRF (X-ray fluorescence) testing. It confirms the metal and its purity, and it leaves no mark on the bar.

Any bar we can't verify is never offered for sale.

Mixed brands, same platinum

Because our stock is pre-owned, the bars come from a range of recognised refiners. Yours may look different to the photo, but it will contain the same quarter ounce of platinum. We always send the best value bar available when you order.

Packaging

Packaging differs from bar to bar. Yours might arrive in its original card or seal, or without it. That has no effect on the metal, and we always pack orders securely.

Keeping track of your platinum

Smaller bars give you choice later on. You could sell one or two and keep the rest. Our platinum prices page shows what we pay for platinum today.

Delivery Information

Orders travel by Royal Mail Special Delivery. Every parcel is fully insured and tracked.

If you order before 1pm on a weekday, we'll normally dispatch it the same day, subject to stock. Our pre-owned stock levels change often, and each bar is tested and authenticated before it's sent.

You can also collect your order. Pick 'Click & Collect' at checkout to save the postage cost, and we'll hold it for you at our Royal Wootton Bassett branch. You'll get an email once it's ready. Please bring official photo ID, for example a passport or driving licence.

Payment is by UK debit card or bank transfer only. We can't accept credit cards.

We sell to UK customers only.

Investing Information

How VAT works on this bar

Unlike investment gold, platinum isn't exempt from VAT in the UK. If you buy a brand new platinum bar, you'll pay standard rate VAT on the whole price.

As this bar is pre-owned, it's sold under the VAT margin scheme instead. VAT is worked out on our margin only, rather than the full price, so pre-owned platinum usually works out more competitive than new.

Capital Gains Tax

Platinum bars aren't exempt from CGT. You'd only pay it if you made a profit when selling and your gains for that tax year were more than your annual allowance.

Selling a quarter ounce bar

There's a busy global market for platinum, and quarter ounce bars from well-known refiners are widely recognised. When you sell, the price will depend on the platinum price at the time. Gold Traders buys platinum bullion, so you're welcome to sell it back to us.

Important: we can tell you the facts about how this product is taxed, but we're not able to give personal financial advice. Please do your own research, and get professional guidance if you need it, before you invest.

Denomination Information

What is a troy ounce?

Precious metals are weighed in troy ounces, not the ounces used for food. One troy ounce is 31.1 grams, so a quarter troy ounce is about 7.78 grams. The name is thought to come from Troyes, a French market town.

Platinum's market price is quoted per troy ounce, which is why ounce-based bars are so popular with investors.

Platinum at a glance

Platinum is one of six closely related metals known as the platinum group metals, alongside palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium. It's very heavy, resists corrosion and melts at around 1,768°C.

Most of its demand comes from industry. Car catalytic converters are the biggest user, with other uses including jewellery, chemical and glass making, and hydrogen fuel cells. That industrial demand gives platinum its own price pattern, separate from gold and silver.

Refining standards

Investment platinum is normally refined to at least 999.5 fine. The London Platinum and Palladium Market (LPPM) maintains the list of refiners approved for Good Delivery platinum, and many of them also produce smaller retail bars.

Why the quarter ounce size?

A 1/4oz bar sits neatly between small gram bars and full ounce bars. It holds a useful amount of platinum, and the premium per gram is usually lower than on very small bars.

Your questions answered

We've compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions. If there's something we haven't covered, please call us & we'll be happy to help. Read all FAQs.

Both hold the same amount of platinum. Smaller bars usually carry a slightly higher premium, but they let you sell part of your holding later. We can't advise on which suits you, but we're happy to talk through the options.

If it's in stock and you order before 1pm on a weekday, it normally leaves us the same day by Royal Mail Special Delivery, with tracking.

A quarter troy ounce is about 7.78 grams. At 999.5 fine, that's roughly 7.77 grams of pure platinum.

We don't sell over the counter, for security and stock reasons, so all orders are placed online.

Choose 'Click & Collect' at checkout to avoid postage, and collect from our Royal Wootton Bassett branch once we've emailed to say it's ready. Bring official photo ID. Payment is by UK debit card or bank transfer only.

Not always. Some pre-owned bars still have their original card or seal and some don't. The platinum is the same either way, and we pack every order securely.

Platinum doesn't get the VAT exemption that investment gold does. Because this bar is pre-owned, we sell it under the VAT margin scheme, so VAT is charged on our margin only, not the whole price.

No, platinum bars aren't CGT-exempt. You'd only owe CGT if you sold at a profit and your gains for that tax year were over your annual allowance.

We accept UK debit cards and bank transfers. Credit cards, Amex and business payment cards can't be used.
