Orders placed before 1pm (Monday to Friday) are dispatched the same day, subject to availability. As pre-owned items, stock levels vary. All bars are individually tested and authenticated before dispatch.

Investing Information

Pre-owned platinum bars are not VAT-exempt. However, as pre-owned items, they are sold under the VAT margin scheme. This means VAT is applied only to our margin - the difference between what we paid for the bar and the price we sell it at - rather than the full sale price.

This is an important distinction. New platinum bars are subject to VAT at the standard rate on the full purchase price. Buying pre-owned under the margin scheme typically works out more cost-effective, even before the lower premium is taken into account.

Capital Gains Tax

Platinum bars are not exempt from Capital Gains Tax in the UK. Unlike UK legal tender gold coins such as Sovereigns or Britannias, platinum bars are not UK legal tender, and any gains you make on disposal may be subject to CGT. If CGT is a consideration for you, we recommend seeking independent financial advice before purchasing.

Liquidity

Platinum is a globally traded precious metal with an active market, though it is a smaller and more specialised market than gold or silver. One-troy-ounce platinum bars from recognised manufacturers are a standard product in the bullion market and are broadly understood by dealers worldwide. As with all bullion, resale value will be influenced by the platinum spot price at the time of sale.

Denomination Information

Platinum has been refined and traded as a precious metal since the 18th century, though its commercial importance grew significantly through the 20th century as industrial applications expanded. Today, platinum is used in catalytic converters, laboratory equipment, jewellery, and - increasingly - hydrogen fuel cells and other clean energy technologies.

Unlike gold, which is held primarily as a store of value, platinum's price is influenced by both investment demand and industrial consumption. This gives it a different price dynamic to gold or silver, which some investors find attractive as a way to diversify their precious metals holdings.

The 1oz Bar Format

One-troy-ounce platinum bars are among the most popular retail formats for platinum investment. They offer a practical balance between size, value, and ease of storage. At the standard purity of 999.5 fine platinum, a 1oz bar contains 31.103 grams of platinum.

Major refiners producing 1oz platinum bars include Umicore, Valcambi, PAMP, Heraeus, and Johnson Matthey, among others. Our Best Value bars are sourced from a range of established manufacturers - all bars meet the minimum 999.5 fine platinum standard.

Refinery Standards

The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) sets global standards for precious metals trading. While LBMA Good Delivery accreditation formally applies to larger institutional bars, the major refiners producing 1oz retail platinum bars operate to the same rigorous production and assay standards. Our pre-owned bars are individually tested before sale to confirm purity and authenticity.
