About this product
The 2027 Gold Half Sovereign Bullion Coin is struck by The Royal Mint in 22 carat yellow gold. On the reverse is Benedetto Pistrucci's famous St George and the dragon. It holds half the gold of a full Sovereign, so it's a lower-cost way to own one of the world's best-known gold coins. With a face value of 50p, it's UK legal tender and free from both VAT and Capital Gains Tax in the UK. As an Official Partner of The Royal Mint, Gold Traders sources every new Half Sovereign directly from the mint.

Product Description
The Sovereign's 22 carat gold standard goes back to 1526. That year, Henry VIII told Cardinal Wolsey to reform the values of English coins, and 22 carat gold was brought in. More than 500 years later, the 2027 Half Sovereign is still made to that same standard.
This year's coin is struck in traditional yellow gold. The Royal Mint says it's only the second time this century. It follows the end of the Sovereign's rose gold era in 2025.
On the reverse, Benedetto Pistrucci's St George rides into battle against the dragon. His design first appeared on the Sovereign in 1817 and is one of the most famous in coin history. The obverse shows the official coinage portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings.
The Royal Mint describes the 2027 range as its most secure yet, with security features on both sides of the coin:
- Latent image: just below the King's portrait, a small image changes between the Tudor Crown, the King's royal cypher and the Tudor Rose as you tilt the coin.
- Half-tone pattern: a fine pattern on the obverse that makes the coin much harder to copy.
- Micro-text: tiny lettering on the reverse spells out HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE, the motto of the Order of the Garter.
The Sovereign's weight is guaranteed to five decimal places, which The Royal Mint says makes it the most tightly specified coin in the world. Each 2027 Half Sovereign weighs 3.994g and contains 3.661g of pure gold.
We send single coins in a protective coin flip. The Royal Mint supplies the 2027 Half Sovereign in transit blister packaging.
With half the gold of a full Sovereign, this coin lets you build up your gold in smaller steps. It also means you can sell a few coins at a time later on, rather than parting with a larger piece.

Investing Information
There's no VAT to pay on the 2027 Half Sovereign. Gold coins that meet HMRC's rules for investment gold are exempt from VAT in the UK, and the Half Sovereign qualifies.
UK residents won't pay Capital Gains Tax on it either. The coin has a face value of 50p, so it's UK legal tender, and gains on UK legal tender coins are exempt from CGT. It's one reason Sovereigns are a favourite with people who build up their gold over many years.
Half Sovereigns are known and traded by bullion dealers across the UK and around the world, so they're simple to sell when the time comes. Gold Traders buys Half Sovereigns too, in branch and by post.
We can explain how tax rules apply to gold coins, but we can't give you personal financial advice. Please do your own research, and talk to a qualified adviser if you need to, before you decide to invest.

Denomination Information
The first Sovereign was struck in 1489 for Henry VII. The modern Sovereign and Half Sovereign followed in 1817, after the Great Recoinage. Back then, the Half Sovereign was worth ten shillings, or half a pound.
The Half Sovereign has carried a few different reverse designs over the years. But Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon is the one most people know, and it now appears on both the Sovereign and the Half Sovereign.
When the UK switched to decimal money in 1971, the Half Sovereign's face value became 50p. It has kept the 22 carat gold standard all along, and the latest coins add modern security features to help protect buyers from fakes.
Today, the Half Sovereign is one of the most popular small gold coins in the UK. It gives buyers a well-known, legal tender way to own gold without paying for a full Sovereign.

It has three. A latent image below the King's portrait changes between the Tudor Crown, the King's royal cypher and the Tudor Rose as you tilt the coin. A half-tone pattern on the same side makes it harder to copy. On the reverse, tiny micro-text spells out HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE.
It has the same design, the same 22 carat gold and the same tax benefits. The difference is size. The Half Sovereign weighs 3.994g, measures 19.30mm across and has a 50p face value. A full Sovereign weighs 7.988g, measures 22.05mm and has a £1 face value.
