Product Description
The Sovereign as we know it today dates from 1817, when Benedetto Pistrucci's design of St George slaying the dragon was chosen for the reverse, and 22 carat gold was set as its enduring standard. The 2027 issue carries that tradition forward, marking a return to the Sovereign's classic yellow gold finish for the second year running, after the rose gold era came to an end in 2025. Pistrucci's celebrated design appears once again on the reverse.
The Sovereign carries the enhanced security features first introduced on the 2026 issue, embellished on both sides of the coin:
- A latent image beneath the portrait of King Charles III, which shifts between the Tudor Crown, the King's own royal cypher, and the Tudor Rose depending on the angle it's viewed from
- A half-tone pattern on the obverse, adding a further layer of protection against counterfeiting
- Micro-text engraving on the reverse spelling out 'HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE', the motto of the Order of the Garter
- A weight guaranteed to five decimal places, making it one of the most tightly specified coins in the world
Individual coins arrive securely protected, with larger orders supplied together in official Royal Mint tubes of 25 coins.
The Sovereign's long history and worldwide recognition make it one of the most trusted and liquid gold coins available today, appealing to first-time buyers and experienced investors alike.

We'll hold your order at our Royal Wootton Bassett branch and email you the moment it's ready to pick up. We take payment by UK debit card or bank transfer. Credit cards aren't accepted, and we currently only supply customers within the UK.
Investing Information
This Sovereign is exempt from VAT in the UK. Investment-grade gold that meets the qualifying criteria is zero-rated for VAT, so the price you pay reflects the gold content alone.
It's also exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. The Sovereign is legal tender in the UK, and UK legal tender coins are free from CGT. That makes it a popular option for investors looking to build a larger holding without the tax considerations that come with other assets.
The Sovereign is one of the most widely recognised gold coins in the world, bought and sold by dealers everywhere. Its long history and instantly recognisable design mean it's rarely difficult to sell on when the time comes.
We're happy to explain how tax rules apply to precious metals, but we can't offer advice on your personal finances. If you're weighing up an investment decision, it's worth doing your own research and speaking to a qualified adviser first.

Denomination Information
The modern Sovereign dates from 1817, when Benedetto Pistrucci's design of St George slaying the dragon was chosen for the reverse. It was struck in 22 carat gold from the outset, a standard the Sovereign has kept ever since.
Pistrucci's design has become one of the most celebrated in coin history: St George on horseback, sword raised, slaying the dragon beneath him. It has featured on the majority of Sovereigns struck since 1817, and appears again on the 2027 issue.
After a period of rose-gold Sovereigns that ended in 2025, The Royal Mint returned the coin to its traditional yellow-gold finish in 2026, the same year it added enhanced anti-counterfeiting features to both sides of the coin. Those security features continue on the 2027 issue.
Today, the Sovereign is one of the most widely recognised and traded gold coins in the world. Its smaller size and lower gold content compared to a full troy ounce coin make it an accessible entry point for new investors, while its long track record keeps it popular with experienced buyers too.
