Product Description

The 1976 Sovereign is the second date of the Machin series. There's no bullion Sovereign dated 1975, so the 1976 follows directly on from the 1974 issue.

Published mintage figures for 1976 vary slightly between references, but all agree that just over 4 million were struck.

Made for investors, not for spending

Like every bullion Sovereign of the 1970s, the 1976 was made for people buying gold, not for use as everyday money. Its value comes from its fixed gold content.

The Royal Mint struck no Sovereigns dated 1977, so the next date after this one is 1978.

Design of the 1976 Sovereign

  • Obverse (front): Arnold Machin's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a tiara. It was the Queen's second coinage portrait, used on UK coins from 1968 until 1984.
  • Reverse (back): Benedetto Pistrucci's St George on horseback slaying the dragon, with the date 1976 below.

Denomination Information

A short history of the gold Sovereign

Britain's modern Sovereign dates from 1817, following the Great Recoinage of 1816. Worth one pound, or 20 shillings, it was quickly trusted by traders across the globe.

Pistrucci's famous reverse

Since 1817, Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon has been the Sovereign's signature design. Few coin designs have lasted so long.

The Sovereign's specification

Sovereigns are still made to the same standard as the first coins, weighing 7.98 grams and containing 7.32 grams of pure gold. Only the portrait moves with the times.

Bullion Sovereigns returned in 1974 after a break of five years, now with Arnold Machin's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Machin's portrait was used on bullion Sovereigns until 1982.

Popular with UK buyers

Sovereigns remain UK legal tender and are still produced by The Royal Mint. No VAT and no Capital Gains Tax for UK residents make them a popular choice.
