Product Description
The Royal Mint struck 5,000,000 Sovereigns dated 1967 at Tower Hill, beside the Tower of London. It's the second-to-last year of Mary Gillick's portrait on the Sovereign.
The following year, 1968, brought the final Gillick Sovereign before a five-year break in production.
The end of an era approaches
In the late 1960s, Britain was preparing for decimal currency, and The Royal Mint was planning a move from London to Llantrisant in South Wales.
The 1967 Sovereign comes from the last years of coin making at Tower Hill, which gives it extra interest for collectors.

Denomination Information
Two centuries of the Sovereign
The modern gold Sovereign was introduced after the Great Recoinage of 1816, and the first coins were struck in 1817. It had a face value of one pound (20 shillings) and soon became one of the world's most trusted coins.
A design that has lasted
The Sovereign's best-known reverse, St George and the dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci, dates from 1817 and is still used today.
Same gold, new portraits
The coin's specification is fixed: 7.98 grams in weight and 7.32 grams of pure gold. The monarch's portrait is the main thing that changes.
After the First World War began in 1914, Sovereigns stopped circulating in Britain. They returned as bullion coins in 1957, carrying Mary Gillick's portrait of the young Queen until 1968.
The Sovereign now
The Royal Mint issues new Sovereigns every year, and the coin remains UK legal tender. Its tax status keeps it among the UK's favourite gold coins.
