Product Description
The Royal Mint struck 3,800,000 Sovereigns dated 1965 at its Tower Hill site in London. The coin was minted in the year of Sir Winston Churchill's death and state funeral.
Like every Gillick Sovereign from 1962 to 1968, it was made as a bullion coin for buyers overseas, not for use in Britain.
A coin made for investors
By the mid-1960s, demand for gold Sovereigns abroad was still strong. Genuine new coins helped satisfy that demand and made forging Sovereigns less profitable.
Today, the 1965 is valued mainly for its gold, with its date adding interest for collectors building a Gillick set.
Design of the 1965 Sovereign
- Obverse (front): Mary Gillick's youthful portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with a laurel wreath tied with ribbons.
- Inscription: ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F:D:, Latin for "Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith".
- Reverse (back): Benedetto Pistrucci's St George slaying the dragon, dated 1965.

VAT-free gold
As investment gold, the 1965 Sovereign is exempt from VAT in the UK. That applies to pre-owned coins just as it does to new ones.
CGT exemption
UK residents don't pay Capital Gains Tax on profits from selling a Sovereign, because it's UK legal tender. That's a key reason investors choose them.

Denomination Information
Where the Sovereign began
The first modern Sovereigns were struck in 1817, after the Great Recoinage of 1816. With a face value of one pound (20 shillings), the coin became famous around the world.
The Sovereign's best-known design
Benedetto Pistrucci's image of St George on horseback, slaying the dragon, was created for the 1817 Sovereign. It remains the coin's defining design.
Unchanged for 200 years
A Sovereign has always weighed 7.98 grams and held 7.32 grams of pure gold. The design on the front changes to show each new monarch.
After the First World War began in 1914, Sovereigns stopped circulating in Britain. They returned as bullion coins in 1957, carrying Mary Gillick's portrait of the young Queen until 1968.
Today's Sovereign
The Royal Mint still strikes Sovereigns, and every one is UK legal tender. With no VAT and no Capital Gains Tax for UK residents, it's one of the UK's most popular gold coins.
