Product Description

If you'd like a gold coin that's easy on the budget but still a true bullion coin, the quarter ounce Gold Britannia is a strong choice. It's the UK's flagship bullion coin in a smaller, more affordable size.

Every coin in this listing is a 24 carat Britannia, dated 2013 or later. That's the year The Royal Mint switched from 22 carat to 999.9 fine gold, so each coin is 99.99% pure gold.

What 'best value' means

These coins have been owned before. They're bullion coins, so you may spot light marks or small scratches from handling. That doesn't change the gold inside, and it's why the premium is lower than on a brand new coin.

We choose the date for you from our stock. Your coin may show Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III, depending on what we have.

Key features

  • A quarter troy ounce (7.78g) of 999.9 fine gold
  • Total weight of 7.80g and a diameter of 22mm
  • £25 face value and UK legal tender
  • Philip Nathan's famous standing Britannia on the reverse
  • More recent coins carry The Royal Mint's anti-counterfeit security features

Checked before it's sold

Our team tests every pre-owned coin with XRF (X-ray fluorescence) before it goes on sale. It confirms the gold content without marking the coin. If we can't confirm a coin is genuine, we don't sell it.

How it arrives

Your coin comes in a protective coin flip, which keeps it safe from knocks and scratches.

A flexible way to hold gold

Smaller coins give you more choice when you come to sell. You could sell one or two quarter ounce coins rather than a whole ounce at once. You can check what we pay for gold today on our website.

We post every order by Royal Mail Special Delivery. It's fully insured, and you can track it all the way.

We only supply UK customers.

Investing Information

No VAT to pay

Investment gold that meets the official criteria is exempt from VAT in the UK, and Gold Britannias qualify. You won't pay any VAT on this coin.

Free from Capital Gains Tax

Gold Britannias are UK legal tender, and UK legal tender coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax. For UK residents, any profit you make when you sell is free from CGT. This is one reason Britannias are so popular, especially with investors building a larger holding.

Easy to sell

The Britannia is one of the most widely recognised bullion coins in the UK, and dealers buy them every day. When you sell, the price will follow the gold price at the time. Gold Traders buys gold coins too, including Britannias.

Please note: we're happy to explain the tax facts, but we can't give personal financial advice. Do your own research, and talk to a qualified adviser if you need to, before you invest.

Denomination Information

Britannia's long history

The figure of Britannia goes back to Roman coins nearly 2,000 years ago. She returned to English coins in the reign of Charles II and has appeared on British coins ever since.

The Gold Britannia bullion coin

The Royal Mint launched the Gold Britannia in 1987 as Britain's own bullion coin. It came in four sizes, 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz, with face values of £100, £50, £25 and £10.

Bullion Britannias feature Philip Nathan's design of Britannia standing with her shield and trident, her robes blowing in the wind.

The switch to 24 carat

From 1987 to 2012, Gold Britannias were struck in 22 carat gold. In 2013, The Royal Mint changed to 999.9 fine gold, in line with other leading bullion coins around the world. Both versions hold the same amount of pure gold, but the 24ct coins are slightly lighter because there's no alloy.

Security features and portraits

In 2021, The Royal Mint added new security features to Britannia bullion coins, including a hidden image that switches between a padlock and a trident when you tilt the coin. Depending on the date, the coins in this listing show either Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III.

Why the quarter ounce?

The quarter ounce sits between the tenth ounce and half ounce sizes. It gives you a useful amount of gold at a lower cost than a full ounce coin.
