Most bullion bars stand upright. This one turns on its side. The 2024 Una and the Lion bar was The Royal Mint's first landscape bar, giving Una and her lion room to stretch across the full width of the bar.
Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark created the front of the bar. It shows Una and the lion together, set against a decorative patterned background.
The Latin inscription 'DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS' runs alongside them. It means 'May God direct my steps', and the same words appeared on William Wyon's famous 1839 Una and the Lion £5 coin. The other side of the bar carries its weight and purity hallmarks.
Una and the lion come from The Faerie Queene, an epic poem by Edmund Spenser first published in 1590. Una is the daughter of a king and queen imprisoned by a dragon. On her quest to free them, she meets a lion. Calmed by her beauty and innocence, the lion becomes her champion instead of attacking her.
This was the first design in The Royal Mint's Una and the Lion bullion bar series. A second edition, designed by Thomas T. Docherty, followed in 2025. Each edition has its own design, so the 2024 bar is the only one with Jody Clark's artwork.
Each bar comes sealed in PVC blister, which protects it from scratches and fingerprints. We recommend keeping it sealed to protect its condition.

UK legal tender silver coins are exempt from CGT, but they carry the same VAT as silver bars.
Silver's price can rise and fall more sharply than gold's, partly because so much silver is used by industry, in things like electronics and solar panels.
When you sell, the price you receive will follow the silver price at the time. Gold Traders buys silver too, and you can check our current silver prices at any time.
Please note: we're happy to explain how tax applies to this bar, but we can't give personal financial advice. Please do your own research, and speak to a qualified adviser if you need to, before you invest.
The story of Una and the lion has inspired artists for centuries. Its most famous appearance is on William Wyon's gold £5 coin of 1839, which showed the young Queen Victoria as Una guiding the lion. Only around 400 were struck, and the coin is now one of the most sought-after in British numismatics.
In 2024, The Royal Mint launched a series of bullion bars inspired by the story, with new interpretations of the design. This silver bar is the first edition, and the design was also made in other precious metals.
Jody Clark is a Royal Mint engraver. He's best known for creating the fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which appeared on UK coins from 2015.
A 1oz bar is a simple size to value, because silver is priced per troy ounce. It's also small enough to buy one at a time, so you can build up your silver gradually.
