Product Description
Along the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace, ten stone beasts represent the royal ancestry of Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour. They inspired The Royal Mint's Royal Tudor Beasts collection, and the second release features the Yale of Beaufort.
About the Yale of Beaufort
A yale is a mythical beast. It's usually shown with the body of a goat or antelope, the tusks of a boar, a lion's tail and large horns that could swivel to face an attack from any side.
The Yale of Beaufort linked Henry VIII to the House of Beaufort through his grandmother. It's also tied to the title of Somerset, which Jane Seymour's brother held as Duke.
It's thought Henry VIII gave the beast to Jane Seymour in honour of her brother.
The design
David Lawrence's reverse design is inspired by the Yale of Beaufort statue at Hampton Court Palace. The background resembles chain mail and includes surface animation, an extra security feature.
The obverse shows Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with the £10 face value. The Yale of Beaufort and the Lion of England are the only coins in the series to carry Queen Elizabeth II's portrait. The Royal Mint has since stopped making Tudor Beasts bullion coins with her portrait.

About The Royal Tudor Beasts
Henry VII and Henry VIII used heraldry to show their right to rule. The ten beasts on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace are a lasting example, and they inspired this Royal Mint collection.
The series
The Royal Mint released one beast at a time from 2022 to 2026, beginning with the Lion of England and finishing with the Seymour Panther.
Gold, silver and platinum
Each beast was struck as a 1oz gold, 1/4oz gold, 2oz silver, 10oz silver and 1oz platinum bullion coin. David Lawrence designed every reverse.
The portraits
The first two releases carry the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. From the Bull of Clarence onwards, the coins show King Charles III by Martin Jennings.
