Product Description

At the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, ten heraldic beasts stood guard at the entrance to Westminster Abbey. Sculpted by James Woodford RA, they inspired The Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts bullion range, which began in 2016.

About the White Lion of Mortimer

The White Lion of Mortimer is the second lion in the series. Unlike the fierce Lion of England, it stands for loyalty and discipline, and sits in a calmer pose.

It came to Queen Elizabeth II through her Yorkist heritage.

The design

Jody Clark shows the lion side-on, highlighting its mane, tail and shield. The shield bears the Mortimer badge, with the 'rose-en-soleil' at its centre. The background has a chain mail texture, which acts as a security feature.

The obverse shows Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with the £5 face value. The White Lion of Mortimer arrived in 2020, alongside the White Horse of Hanover.

Investing Information

How VAT works on this coin

Silver coins aren't exempt from VAT in the UK. Because this one is pre-owned, it's sold under the VAT margin scheme, so VAT only applies to our margin. That tends to make pre-owned silver better value than new.

Capital Gains Tax

This coin is UK legal tender, so UK residents pay no Capital Gains Tax on any profit when they sell. That can be useful as a holding grows.

Easy to recognise

As a Royal Mint bullion coin, the White Lion of Mortimer coin is familiar to UK bullion dealers, which helps when it's time to sell.

Our advice policy

We're glad to explain how VAT and tax apply to this coin, but we can't give personal financial advice. Do your own research first, and get professional guidance if you need it.

Denomination Information

Where the range came from

The ten Queen's Beasts statues were sculpted by James Woodford RA for the 1953 coronation. Each beast stands for a strand of the Queen's royal ancestry.

The bullion sizes

The beasts were struck as 1oz gold, 1/4oz gold and 2oz silver bullion coins. 10oz silver and 1oz platinum editions were added, often dated a year after the first release.

A first for UK bullion

The Royal Mint describes the 2016 Lion of England as the first official two-ounce UK bullion coin.
