Product Description
The 1oz Silver Canadian Maple Leaf has been one of the world's most sought-after silver bullion coins since its introduction in 1988. These pre-owned coins are sourced directly from our authenticated stock and verified by our in-house team before being offered for sale. You receive all the investment value of a Maple Leaf at some of the lowest premiums available in the UK market.
Each coin contains exactly one troy ounce of .9999 fine silver - four nines purity - making the Silver Maple one of the purest silver coins ever produced. This outstanding purity has been a constant feature since the very first issue, and it remains one of the primary reasons the Maple Leaf commands such a strong following among silver investors worldwide.
The reverse of the coin features the iconic sugar maple leaf - Canada's national symbol - designed by Royal Canadian Mint engraver Walter Ott. This design has appeared on every single issue since 1988, making it one of the most consistently recognisable coin designs in the bullion world. The obverse has carried a succession of royal portraits over the years, reflecting changes in Canadian coinage: Arnold Machin's effigy appeared on coins from 1988 to 1989, followed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt (1990-2003), Susanna Blunt (2004-2022), and from 2024 onwards, the portrait of King Charles III. Collectors sometimes seek specific portrait years, adding a numismatic dimension to what is primarily an investment coin.
From 2014, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced significant security upgrades to the Silver Maple Leaf. Each coin now features radial lines - precisely machined across both faces of the coin to create a unique light-diffracting pattern - along with a micro-engraved maple leaf privy mark showing the year of issue. These features make modern Maples among the most secure silver coins in circulation and assist with rapid authentication.
As pre-owned coins, you will receive our choice of date from our current stock. We hold a range of dates and do our best to supply a selection when multiple coins are ordered, though this may not always be possible. Coins may show minor surface marks, light scratches, or milk spotting - all of which are entirely normal characteristics of circulated silver bullion and have no effect on the coin's silver content or value.
Coins are available individually or in full tubes of 25. Tubes are a popular format for investors looking to build a stack of consistent silver weight.

Investing Information
These pre-owned Silver Maple Leaf coins are sold under the VAT margin scheme. This means VAT is applied only to our dealer's margin, not to the full value of the silver. In practical terms, this makes pre-owned silver coins significantly more cost-effective than buying new silver coins, where standard-rate VAT applies to the entire purchase price. Whether you buy new or pre-owned, the coins contain exactly the same amount of pure silver - one troy ounce per coin. The only difference is the tax treatment.
Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coins are not exempt from Capital Gains Tax in the UK. Unlike UK legal tender coins such as the Silver Britannia or Gold Sovereign, the Silver Maple Leaf does not carry a face value in pounds sterling and therefore does not qualify for CGT exemption. Any gains realised on disposal may be subject to CGT. If CGT is a consideration for you, we recommend seeking independent financial advice.
The Silver Maple Leaf is one of the most liquid silver coins in the world. It is produced by the Royal Canadian Mint - an LBMA Good Delivery-listed refinery - and is recognised and tradeable by bullion dealers globally. Pre-owned Maples trade at broadly the same buy rates as new issues in the secondary market, since dealers price on silver content rather than condition. This makes pre-owned Maples a highly efficient way to hold physical silver.
While we can share factual details about tax treatment, we cannot offer individual financial advice. Please do your own research and seek professional guidance if needed before making an investment decision.

Denomination Information
The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf was first issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988, making Canada the fourth country in the world to produce a one-ounce silver bullion coin - following Mexico, China, and the United States. From the very first issue, the coin was struck in .9999 fine silver: a standard of purity that was exceptional in 1988 and remains so today, exceeding most comparable coins including the Silver Britannia (.999) and the American Silver Eagle (.999).
The coin's reverse design - Walter Ott's detailed maple leaf - has remained unchanged across every annual issue since 1988. This consistency has contributed significantly to the coin's global recognition. The maple leaf itself is one of the most iconic national symbols in the world, appearing on the Canadian flag since 1965 and on coinage for far longer. The reverse legend highlights the coin's weight and fineness, while 'CANADA' is prominently displayed above the leaf.
The obverse has evolved over the decades to reflect changes in Canadian coinage. Arnold Machin's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appeared on the earliest issues (1988-1989), followed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt's effigy (1990-2003), then Susanna Blunt's portrait (2004-2022). From 2024, the obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III, continuing the tradition of royal imagery on Canadian legal tender. Coins from transitional years - particularly 2023 - are sometimes of additional interest to collectors.
The Royal Canadian Mint introduced a major security upgrade to the Maple Leaf series in 2014. Radial lines, machined precisely into the master die, create a distinctive light-diffracting effect across both faces of the coin. A micro-engraved maple leaf privy mark, featuring the year of issue, provides an additional layer of authentication. These features were a direct response to the emergence of sophisticated counterfeits in the global silver market and have set a new standard for anti-counterfeit technology in bullion coins.
In terms of mintage, the Silver Maple Leaf has generally been produced in very large quantities - particularly from 2007 onwards - reflecting strong global investor demand. The Royal Canadian Mint has not published official mintage figures since 2014, meaning precise production data for recent years is not publicly available. This has no bearing on liquidity, as the coin remains one of the most widely traded silver bullion coins in the world.
The Royal Canadian Mint, established in 1908, has been a member of the London Bullion Market Association's Good Delivery List since 1919 - one of the most respected credentials in the precious metals industry. This membership provides independent assurance of the weight and purity of every coin produced.
