These pre-owned Silver Maple Leaf coins are sold under the VAT margin scheme. This means VAT is applied only to our dealer's margin, not to the full value of the silver. In practical terms, this makes pre-owned silver coins significantly more cost-effective than buying new silver coins, where standard-rate VAT applies to the entire purchase price. Whether you buy new or pre-owned, the coins contain exactly the same amount of pure silver - one troy ounce per coin. The only difference is the tax treatment.

Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coins are not exempt from Capital Gains Tax in the UK. Unlike UK legal tender coins such as the Silver Britannia or Gold Sovereign, the Silver Maple Leaf does not carry a face value in pounds sterling and therefore does not qualify for CGT exemption. The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf was first issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988, making Canada the fourth country in the world to produce a one-ounce silver bullion coin - following Mexico, China, and the United States. From the very first issue, the coin was struck in .9999 fine silver: a standard of purity that was exceptional in 1988 and remains so today, exceeding most comparable coins including the Silver Britannia (.999) and the American Silver Eagle (.999).

The coin's reverse design - Walter Ott's detailed maple leaf - has remained unchanged across every annual issue since 1988. This consistency has contributed significantly to the coin's global recognition. The maple leaf itself is one of the most iconic national symbols in the world, appearing on the Canadian flag since 1965 and on coinage for far longer. The reverse legend highlights the coin's weight and fineness, while 'CANADA' is prominently displayed above the leaf.

The obverse has evolved over the decades to reflect changes in Canadian coinage. Arnold Machin's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appeared on the earliest issues (1988-1989), followed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt's effigy (1990-2003), then Susanna Blunt's portrait (2004-2022). From 2024, the obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III, continuing the tradition of royal imagery on Canadian legal tender. Coins from transitional years - particularly 2023 - are sometimes of additional interest to collectors.

The Royal Canadian Mint introduced a major security upgrade to the Maple Leaf series in 2014. Radial lines, machined precisely into the master die, create a distinctive light-diffracting effect across both faces of the coin. A micro-engraved maple leaf privy mark, featuring the year of issue, provides an additional layer of authentication. These features were a direct response to the emergence of sophisticated counterfeits in the global silver market and have set a new standard for anti-counterfeit technology in bullion coins.

In terms of mintage, the Silver Maple Leaf has generally been produced in very large quantities - particularly from 2007 onwards - reflecting strong global investor demand.
