What Is A Half Sovereign?
The Half Sovereign: 50% of the gold content, all the quality and reputation. Like the Full Sovereign, the Half Sovereign has been continuously minted in its modern form since 1817. It is a welcome addition to The Royal Mint's bullion offering, presenting a lower barrier to entry than its less affordable counterparts.
It is acceptable to frame the Half Sovereign as something of a smaller sibling to the Full Sovereign. While not the most accessible of the range, an accolade that goes to the Quarter Sovereign, the Half Sovereign is a fantastic way to invest in gold without committing to the larger denominations. This attractive proposition makes the Half Sovereign one of the most popular gold bullion choices in the UK and beyond.
Gold Traders will buy your Half Sovereign coins at an upfront and competitive price, with no hidden fees. To begin your deal, fill out our concise online claim form or get in touch.

Half Sovereign: Specification
As suggested by its title, much of the uniqueness of the Half Sovereign lies in its specifications. Naturally, the precious metal content is half that of the Full Sovereign. Therefore, 3.66 grams of pure gold can be found in each 3.99 gram Half Sovereign coin.
The diameter is also slightly smaller at 19.30 millimetres. If you don't have scales to hand, this is a useful way to identify if your coin is a Full or Half Sovereign. If your coin has a slightly smaller diameter than a 1p piece, it is at least a Half Sovereign. Conversely, you are holding a Full or greater Sovereign should it hold a larger diameter than a 1p.
Much like the rest of the range, 22ct gold is used to strike post-1817 Half Sovereigns. This makes the coin 91.67% pure and accompanied by 8.33% alloyed metals such as copper (which can produce a rose or reddish finish on the coin).
Gold Traders are happy to verify your Half Sovereign to ensure a fair price is offered. To do this, you can either use our postal service- through the online claim form - or visit us in person at our Wiltshire office just outside Swindon.
Common Designs Of The Half Sovereign
With little exception, such as 2025's Royal Arms edition, the reverse will hold a depiction of St George slaying the Dragon. This is a collector-favourite design by Benedetto Pistrucci and is widely considered one of the finest works found on UK coinage, synonymous with the UK Sovereign.
The other side, known as the obverse, will depict the ruling monarch from your coin's year. For Half Sovereigns, this means the obverse will bear an effigy of monarchs from George III to Charles III, with some years and individuals being rarer and more valuable.
Which Half-Sovereigns Are Worth The Most?
An exciting part about Sovereigns is that, while they should not be worth less than their intrinsic value, some are worth far more than their valuation on the investment market. This is true not least in Half Sovereigns, many of which demand high prices in the collector's space.
One of the more obvious ways to discover if your Half Sovereign is possibly rare is to look at the monarch. For instance, examples from the earlier years of Queen Victoria's reign, known as 'Young Head' Half Sovereigns, may be valuable. Likewise, Edward VII and George V iterations can fetch higher prices. Remember - condition is important and even common Half Sovereigns can hold increased value should they be of great standard.
While primarily a bullion coin, some Half Sovereigns are released with collectors in mind. These examples, often supplied in presentation boxes, often hold a heavily limited mintage number and a highly collectable proof quality.
It is important to be equipped with all the details of your Half Sovereign before searching for the best deal. That is why we launched a new site - Gold Sovereign Expert - inviting you to use a free tool to help determine the rarity of any Sovereign, Half or otherwise.
