UK Five Sovereign Gold £5 Crown Coin

What Is A Five Sovereign?

The Five Sovereign: head of the Sovereign family, and a flagship among flagships. The Royal Mint touts the Five Sovereign - sometimes called the Gold Crown or Quintuple Sovereign - as the most impressive coin in its premier bullion offering. Any Five Sovereign demands special attention in even the most mature of coin collections. But, its essence as a bullion coin remains strong.

Like the Double Sovereign, the Five Sovereign was first struck in 1820. While a small number of mintage years are present over the proceeding decades, it is not until 1887 that the first Quintuple Sovereigns were struck for public circulation. In fact, we must look as recent as 1980 for the Five Sovereign's more widespread production, as since this year the coin has been minted regularly  for eager collectors and investors.

Specification: Is The Five Sovereign Valuable?

On paper, the Five Sovereign will always be more valuable than its smaller siblings in the Sovereign range. This is due to its gold content which, you may have guessed, is equal to five standard Full Sovereigns. On the bullion market, this Crown therefore demands the highest prices among the Sovereign family.

Digging into the specifications that produce this investment's impressive value uncovers a coin holding no less than 36.60 grams of pure gold, or 1.17 Troy Oz. A 36.02 millimetre diameter, slightly smaller than the modern cupronickel £5 Crown, also showcases each design in meticulous detail. As of its peers, the 5 Sovereign is struck in 22ct gold.

Are Five Sovereigns Rare?

The Five Sovereign is likely the rarest of Sovereign denominations in the average investment portfolio or coin collection. However, even beyond this highly exclusive baseline there exists examples of the Quintuple Sovereign that fetch far beyond their intrinsic value.

As releases pre-1980 are scarce, collectability increase previous to this mintage year. One of the earliest Five Sovereign coins did not feature the widespread George & Dragon reverse, instead opting to bear William Wyon's Una and the Lion sculpture. This example, celebrating the ascension of Queen Victoria, is one of the rarest and most valuable British coins in existence!

Even if not a sought-after Victoria edition, it is best to fully understand your Five Sovereign before looking to sell. At Gold Traders, our numismatists will inspect your coin and, at minimum, offer you our best price as close to the trading 'spot' figure as possible.

The Quintuple Sovereign is most often found as part of a set, indicating it will hold a proof quality finish. In fact, for some years, the 5 Sovereign is exclusively available within proof sets. Of course, Gold Traders will take all of the above into account when valuing your Five Sovereign coin.
