How to Identify A Double Sovereign
In figuring out which Sovereign you have, size is a useful starting point. The Double Sovereign holds a diameter of 28.40 millimetres. Handily, this is the same as the current UK £2 coin - which also shares a face value with the Double Sovereign.
As Royal Mint Sovereigns are struck with such precision and accuracy, measuring the gross weight is another key indicator. Double Sovereigns are struck in 15.98 grams of 22ct gold, which is 91.67% pure gold by composition. The Double Sovereign therefore has a pure gold content of 14.64 grams, or 0.47 Troy Ounces.
If you are unsure as to the type of gold coins you have to sell, our numismatists will identify and authenticate your gold for you. This is to make sure any resulting sale is carried out with all the necessary facts shared and accounted for. If you'd like this, our postal service is an efficient way to sell your Sovereigns securely. If you are wondering how to get started, we invite you to get in touch or fill out our claim form online.
Double Sovereign Designs
The Double Sovereign will generally depict the ruling monarch alongside St George and the Dragon on its obverse and reverse respectively. However, the Double Sovereign has been a popular candidate for commemorative designs over the last few decades, meaning some design variation exists. 1989's 500th anniversary of the Sovereign and the 2022 Platinum Jubilee commemorative are such examples.
Which Double Sovereigns Are Rarest?
This heftier member of the Sovereign series has a less consistent production history than other bullion denominations such as the Full and Half, which have been reliably minted in large numbers in most years since 1817. The Double Sovereign's story starts in 1820, but it is understood to have been minted widely since only the late 20th century.
Before this, the Double Sovereign was most commonly employed to celebrate a new monarch acceding the throne, and to present their subsequent definitive coinage effigies. This makes Double Sovereigns predating around 1980 more likely to be of increased rarity and value.
This doesn't, however, imply all recent Double Sovereigns are 'common'. The Royal Mint has imposed strict issue limits on a number of modern releases, alongside proof standard finishes, limited designs, and piedfort specifications.
