The 2 Rand coin was created to replace the South African Pound as part of the country's move towards decimalisation of its currency. As such, the 2 Rand coin represents 200 South African cents.
While the Rand is still considered legal tender in the Common Monetary Area and Namibia, it has been largely removed from circulation after being replaced by the Krugerrand. Replacing the Rand with the Krugerrand began in 1967 and was finally completed in 2002. To make trade negotiations more flexible, the Rand was minted in both 1 Rand and 2 Rand denomination coins until March of 2002.
The coin weighs in a 7.98 grams and is made of 22 carat gold. The South African 2 Rand coin has the same dimensions as the British Sovereign, being 22.00 millimetres in diameter and 1.83 millimetres in thickness.
The front face of the early (1993 and earlier) 2 Rand coin bears the forward-facing image of Cape Town's founder, Jan van Riebeeck, while the reverse side of the coin is graced with the 1948 South African 5 Shillings Springbok design by Coert Steynberg.
There have been some design changes to the 2 Rand coin over the years, including a redesign of the numerals on the coin and the replacement of Jan van Riebeecks portrait with the image of the South African Coat of Arms on the obverse of the coin in mints from 1994 onwards. During this period, the coins were also minted with 11 different languages.
